Looks like he is with me until the 12th when I go home. Doing well but road signs seem to be his weakness. We are on a multi stop load to the Bronx, Brooklyn, then across the border to NJ. Should be fun.

Seems to be every trainee's strugle. My current one has the same issue. its about the only thing he needs to work on tho. Everything else he picked up quite fast.

We made it out and have round 2 tomorrow in Brooklyn. He did alright. There were a couple moments I was gripping the door handle and holding my breath. His city driving is a little rough.

Lol, Kind of reminds me when my grandpa took me driving in his rig for the first time, Dead of Winter in Alaska and I'm 13 and he seemed to think then was a good time to teach me to drive, I can still feel the whack on the back of my head every time I grinded a gear lol. Learned fast and enjoyed my time with him.

I'm sure he was like you in a way, Holding his breath and praying to god I did not jack it into a tree. Learned alot from him and thur those years. An experience I would never trade.

BTW Misesian, Want to make the board easier to read. Go down to the bottom and click the "Truckers Report Revision 2" and change the skin to Truckers Report dark... Holy crap so much easier to read now and my head don't feel like its going to explode.

I can tell he is ready to get off the truck. He hates that I make him drive like an old man. He says I don't shift right. I say, but who isn't scratching every gear? He is very slow to adopt my tips. After two weeks of griping at him to down shift my way he is finally doing it. And sure enough it has made his down shifts 100% better.
I do things different than the guys he rode with and the school he went to so he is slow to adopt my driving style. Right now he is learning how to plan trips and such using ONLY an atlas and the customer phone number. He has never used a map before. Baby steps.

It is amazing at how many ppl dont know how to read a map...or know which compass direction they are heading!

And speaking of road signs, my 1st trainer made me rattle off every traffic sign/overpass height, etc. I encountered until it became natural to notice/heed them while driving.

    jayfish and Fajo Thank this.

Dropping him off late tonight. He gets his own truck Tuesday. He still isn't great at reading road signs but has improved a lot.

Awesome. Sounds like you're a great trainer! I go with a trainer sometime this week or next. I like reading these posts, as it'll help me out a lot. Especially the road signs. I do a good job now at it. I'm more fearful of backing right now lol I know when I tested for my cdl the other day, a guy failed for speeding, I passed. I asked him if he saw the huge yellow sign that said 45mph ahead. He said no, he was looking at oncoming traffic. I know as a trucker you have to pay attention to everything. So I try my hardest to watch road signs. Even the trainers at the range would quiz us on a sign after we passed it.

The key to backing is small turns of the wheel. Only start cranking it when you reach the point you want the tandems to pivot on. If you start a back by cranking the wheel you just end up chasing your trailer.
