My terminal manager was fine with it from the beginning. I didn't take her out with me until summer was over. By then I knew what I was doing and she wouldn't be hot out here.

Lucky enough for me my terminal is in that area and can deadhead me if need be. Im 100 miles from a state our planner books loads for.

I have also decided to lease my company truck. I will be handing it over in February to have them "in service" it for me as a lease op. I will have a big chunk of cash in the bank by then. They told me I can put an APU on it too; you just have to own it out-right. I will definitely be doing that. I went back and forth about it a lot and it isn't that bad for someone looking to make that transition. I am hoping to make enough at it so I can get my own truck and trailer when the lease is up; becoming fully independent. That is my goal at least.
ChipperDawg and Fajo Thank this. -
To be honest with you, as much as you run and the miles I know you get you will do fine. The truck you have is a good one and gets decent fuel milage. Having a savings set aside is a good idea, its how I did mine. There were tough weeks. But from the times we have got to talk personally I think you will do great at it.
Pass me a PM if you got any questions mes, ill help ya wade thur the BS that I have learned over the years of leasing with them.Misesian Thanks this. -
In the year I have been in this truck it has only been down twice. Both of those were a bad sensor and it was in and out in only a few hours. This Volvo is a strong truck and I think it will be a good lease truck. I rarely see below 7.1 mpg in it. Only a really rough route will drop it that low. I stay between 7.5 - 7.8 as an average.

Good luck Misesian I too believe you got this following your post since day one you been humble goes along way in this business.
Misesian Thanks this. -
Just an FYI from 7 yrs ago when Knight was selling Volvos & Petes..the Volvos were hard to sell as oppose to the Petes which commanded a higher price! I would imagine the Internationals would also be easier to sell (?). I liked the Volvos but they had a history then of having many probs not related to the drive train but accessories, etc.
The 379 Petes (Ultracab Classics) were old school and had serious gauges and chrome & metal instrument controls, etc. where the Volvos primarily were plastic and gauges slightly better than idiot lights.... -
Knight has got rid of both the old style petes and the new style. When I asked about it they told me Knight was having a hard time keeping them on the road and when they did break the price was also always double what it was to fix another brand. There is still some of the bubble nose ones floating around as O/O's I have not seen a long nose O/O in a while now.
On the note of the Volvo's it seems like they have came along way. Anything 2012 and above is seen as reliable by Knight.
The old Internationals like mine (Cummins) are becoming hard to find, Knight refuses to lease the maxxfarce ones as they have all been agreed to be traded. Maybe a O/O or 2 with one that they had as a company truck. Problem is this next year the Internationals will fall out of the lease program for a while as we did not start getting them with cummins again until 2014. So that will leave a 2 year gap from being able to get a Prostar.. -
The main prob w/long-nosed Pete's was keeping them from getting 'beat up' by the rookie drivers due to the larger turning radius etc.! They finally wised up and went to the short-nose Ultracabs, and then since I left, to get better mileage went to the newer streamlined Pete's.
Btw, I picked up a new gray Refridge long-nosed Pete at the factory in Denton, TX and drove a Miller beer load out of Ft. Worth back to Phx where the new Pete was to be prep' d (gov'd, decaled, Qcom, air foil added, etc.) at 70 mph and got only 2-2.5 mpg it was so tight and non-aerodynamic.
EDIT: Fortunately the Pete's had 2 large fuel tanks (125/150 gal?). Do the Volvos still have 'unequal' fuel tanks---75 & 100 gal? Always wondered if the smaller one was to meet weight reqmts or just to fit in a smaller space?Last edited: Nov 13, 2015
