I believe the question was about fuel mileage and breakdowns.

My advice is that the grades out here are much longer than out east and a lot of folks burn their brakes up quick as they are scared. SO when about to go down a 6 mile long, 6% grade use your jakes and dont go fast at the start like other drivers. The fuel mileage can be rough sometimes as like crossing I-90 going from WA and to about Bozeman, MT and no you dont use less fuel because of the thin air, thats pure "trucker talk". Now for cell phone coverage there are many places with weak or no coverage in some streches so have food and water at all times on board for emergencies. Its not like waiting for days but it can be several hours. In the winter, the road can be shutdown for awhile and you will need food and water to get by.

Take 43,000lbs from la to reno approx. 500 miles....take that same load 500 miles in the Midwest plains or south even the easy coast.....see which one you get better mpgs on?...try it...I already know...and you don't get better mpgs from thinner air,lol...its worse fuel consumption.....and btw....fuel is more expensive usually in the northwest southwest and especially California....the constant grades make a huge difference in your mpgs...especially if your heavy.also more isolated....your not going to find a truckstop every 20 miles (maybe on the interstate)...but there is a whole lot more to the west then the interstate hwy system....try hwy 93,95, thru Nevada and Idaho.....395 in California hwy 97 thru California and Oregon...heck just for fun try hwy 50 thru Nevada, you will love that one, there is a nice big surprise hill on that route.....anyone can run the interstates always....lots of signs say 100 or more miles(on us and state hwys) no fuel ,no services, hehehe....

Lol, the food coverage is also week in some stretches due to all the truck stops opting to have casinos vs resturants. Better pack a lunch if going from WA to Bozeman, MT.

I run 97 through cali and oregon all the time and honestly i love that road. its such a nice easy drive in the summer. but ive also run it alot in the winter when its snowpacked and ice. had a mini jackknife on 97 just outta k falls and had to stop and change my undergarments lol. I love running out west compared to back east. There is something i love about hte mountains and its less congested and just betterrunning if you ask me. I also think it makes you a better driver being able to navigate the mountains and 6-7 % grades at all times of the year. not saying that no one back east arent good drivers im just saying i feel that im a better driver because of the fact that iget to run the mountains out west

I will save your life. You can go down a mountain 1000 times to slow, But just once too fast. Think about it. :biggrin_25514:
