Ok, I realize this exact question probably gets asked once a week, so sorry about that. Just feel like I need to get some input because this is a really big decision for me.
First, a little bit about me:
I got my CDL from a local community college. Went to Schneider orientation in 2013, and lasted one whole day that's all the time I needed to realize Schneider and I weren't right for each other. Let's just say I wasn't impressed with the facilities, employees, and 99% of the new recruits (sorry if that sounds harsh).
Fast forward to now:
I was about to accept an offer from Celadon to fly me out to Laredo, TX for training, but something inside of me is telling me that it will be the exact same thing as Schneider, only this time I'll be in a white truck and will have to fly 1500 miles to find out that I hate it.
I will be grateful for any advice or suggestions.
This is my wish list:[TABLE="class: entities_table, width: 100%"]
[TR]
[TD="align: left"]♠ A solid company who treats their employees with dignity and respect.
♠ Hires and trains noobs from VA.
♠ At least 80% no touch freight.
♠ Isn't impossible to get hired.
♠ Not essential, but I would like to get some long hauls out west.
I'm really liking the looks of YRC, Averitt, and Old Dominion, but those seem to be pretty hard to get into, and not sure if they would get me out west. Also looking at Van Wyke and Abilene, but Van Wyke seems to be hard to break into as well.

Pride Transport runs West Coast & lots of it. Also 100% no-touch freight.
You're quitting on the first day of orientation or even before filling out an application with another company. Follow through on something; your first job isn't a lifetime commitment. You probably won't run West Coast with Old Dominion unless it's teams.
I'm with you on the West Coast turns; that's what I prefer also.
Apply with:
Pride Transport
Abilene Motor Express
Jim Palmer Trucking(jptdrivers.com)
Navajo Express
There you go, West Coast running hard. Just get it done! If you aren't happy in 6 months, then change jobs. Right now, just get moving.
A new CDL grad posted he was offered a job with Jim Palmer Trucking even though the website has 2 yrs. experience required. Always ignore "experience required" with any company and apply anyway.Last edited: Dec 5, 2014

Van Wyk. They'll hire you quick as long as you pass your drug test.
Were you going to work for Schneider outta of Gordonsville? That's a good gigMontgomery Thanks this. -
Number one goal should be to find the company with a great training program and takes the time to be helpful and supportive.
That in itself is difficult enough to find.
Averitt is regional truckload for the most part.
YRC and Old Dominion are LTL and one is union.
Totally different types of work from each other.
Averitt I do know is anal about things compared to other doing the same type of work.
They require you to wear a uniform, no showing tattoos (they'll give you patches to cover them up) and they have a facial hair policy (pretty much not allowed to have facial hair).
You're a noob.. the few companies that hire noobs take on a lot of risk by hiring someone with no experience.
Once you've proven yourself are you worth something and then can have a near limitless choice of companies/jobs.Montgomery Thanks this. -
I think you care too much about the things that don't matter. Who cares what the other recruits are like? You aren't going to be seeing them when you're working anyway. The facilities are what they are. If you think they are bad wait until you are living in a truck then they probably won't look so bad.
Montgomery Thanks this. -
OP, if you get into trucking, you won't be a virgin for long.
May as well relax and give it up as quickly as possible.
Be a good trucker; just remember that you are already dead. Only then will you function as a proper driver.
Is it really any wonder that the 'Megas' tend to favor ex military?Last edited: Dec 5, 2014

I started at Abilene earlier this year and so far I'm liking it a lot. Owner Op spec'd trucks with great maintenance. Rumored pay raise 1st of the year but that's Channel 19 News lol. PM me for further info if you'd like....
Montgomery Thanks this. -
Thanks for the advice, and I agree, I need to stick with my next job, even if I'm not in love with it right away. Abilene is looking good.
Still considering Van Wyke. Real nice trucks from what I've seen. Good to know they aren't impossible to get in with. I was signed up for regional with Schneider Yeah I've heard real good things about Gordonsville.
I can see why it might look like I'm being picky just trying to make an informed decision. How would you say these companies' training programs stack up to a company like Celadon? I've heard very good things about Averitt's training, Celadon not so much. Really don't know anything about Van Wyke, Abeline, YRC, or Old Dominion. I wouldn't mind wearing a uniform, might actually enjoy it, but I'm weird like that.
Haha you've got a point there Maybe I'm just over-thinking it.
Haha, where do I get off wanting get started with a respectable company in this business? I must be crazy!
Lol, if its on the news, it must me true. Good to hear you like it. Everything I've read about them so far is positive. Thanks for the offer to PM, there isn't too much info on the website for drivers. -
I'm just curious as to your reasoning behind the comment of Averitt is hard to get into? The process may take some time for them to do checks and such, but once your in, your in...
What division were you looking to get into at Averitt?
Where do you want to run out of?
... and is there something that may be stopping you from getting hired besides the fact that yes we were uniforms, have a facial policy, and can't show tattoos?
If it's the last one, I'll tell ya this... I lost count the customers that have a MUCH different attitude when they talk to me as opposed to another driver. I'm not clean shaven, but cleaned up; have a clean uniform that doesn't stink; and have a positive attitude towards the pick-up / delivery. First appearances DO make a difference.
Now of course I'm not knocking ANY driver as to what they wear or how they carry themselves, but we all know the ones I'm talking about. -
Chinatown Thanks this.
