I'm finishing my training next week, road test on the 24th, and want to have as little downtime as possible before getting back to work and generating some (much needed) income.
There are quite a few companies out there promising me everything from soup to nuts....guaranteed home time, guaranteed bonuses, profit sharing, you name it, someone has promised it to me.
I know that as a newbie, I am NOT going to get all the plums...those have to be earned over the years. But one or two of them would be nice
So....who would you recommend as a Canadian (Ontario) company for a new driver? I'm in the S Ontario area (60 miles west of Toronto), would prefer to run dry van on a local (within 800 miles) radius. I have no impediment to border crossing, no accidents, no points on my record. I am prepared to accept mandatory training/supervision, wear company uniforms, sing the company happy song if necessary (grin), and in general be a good boy. I would prefer NOT to run team (after completing my probation with my trainer/supervisor) or flatbed. More than happy to take training on reefer, liquid or bulk, propane and hazardous goods.
Any recommendations as to companies to either look at, or stay away from?
Good Canadian Trucking Companies?

Schnieder has a terminal right in your area, just off the 401. Werner has a place in Milton, just east of you. Drove for Werner as a Canada driver for a short time, and I was home every 10 days. I worked out of the Woodhaven dropyard just south of Detroit. Schnieder has a terminal in Woodhaven as well. I know these are US companies, but you should not have much of an issue getting in.
Anyone willing to border jump almost daily is needed by at least these two.
As far as Canadian co's? How about Challenger? Mill Creek? Hoss? Challenger and Mill Creek both have terminals in Cambridge. Then there is always VHL,STL, TransX, and many others. I know Challenger offers training, not sure about the others though.
Good luck, and be safe above all else. -
Thanks Johnday. I was aware of most of those companies you had listed, just was hoping to hear from some drivers that had worked for them, so that I know which ones (if any) should be avoided.

My biggest problem with them was that it seemed a bit dysfunctional company. Unless I dealt with the people mentioned, no one had a clue. And then there were issues with the truck I could never get addressed. Other than the bent/dented up truck I had, there were mechanical problems, clutch brake didn't work, doors had to be slammed VERY hard to get them closed, drive brakes, in my mind, were marginal. That truck was an embarrassment to me. Inverters are not allowed unless a medical condition warrants it. The terminal, I was out of was Unsprungfield, [Springfield], Ohio. Those people there are completely goofy. Mechanics can over-ride Safety Dept on what gets repaired on a truck. If you have truck issues, you are much better off getting it repaired at a T/A or other facility. But all that is pretty typical of the last two companies I've been with.
But, they will keep you in Canada, usually somewhere along the 401 and into Quebec.
The pay? That's pathetic. $.28 per mile is what I got. The low pay and cosmetic/mechanical condition of my truck is why I lasted only 12 weeks with them.
Hometime, now that worked well for me, and would for you as well judging from being in Kitchener. I named my hometime, and was home every 10 days with 2 off.
I haved talked to many Challenger drivers, and there didn't seem to be much whinning from them.
Not sure where in Kitchener you are, but take a ride over to the T/A in Woodstock and talk to some of the drivers over there.
Likely not what you wanted to hear, eh? Good luck anyway -
Thanks for the info, Johnday. I have an interview next week with Challenger, and am still waiting to hear from a few others. My ideal would be with Tim Hortons (don't laugh...I've heard nothing but good about that company) but they are generally looking for more experienced drivers. I realize I'm going to have to put in my time in the trenches first, before I get the 'good' jobs.

Good Luck with Challenger, I considered them myself at one time. Can't remember why I didn't follow up. I think it may have been they don't hire US drivers, I could be wrong on that. I do know they have a leg up in Detroit with MCX, that's Motor City Xpress.
They have decent looking trucks at the least, Volvo's and a few new Pete's I've seen, and they're usually clean and shiny.
Oh yeah, the Timmy trucks. I've talked to those guys as well. Never heard a bad word about them, and we all know, Timmy has the best coffee!!
Be safe, and have fun!Last edited: Nov 21, 2008
