    This can't be stated enough when talking fuel mileage, especially if you are pulling a van. I live in the east so when I go west I prefer to haul light and I watch the weather before a trip. When I'm headed back east I don't mind being heavier. The mileage difference with wind is real.

    There's a thread on here about dispatcher vs. dispatching yourself right now. Try explaining all this to your dispatcher after all the other specifics of getting a decent load. I won't ever have to worry about this. If I had a dispatcher THEY would fire ME after about a day!

    I pumped 100 gallons in Oregon this morning and another 75 in California before heading home. They must have just switched to winter blend because my mileage is suffering. I had a light load in the box and it was pretty much all down hill, and never got better than 8 mpg all the way home with no head winds today.

    yup, when they add winterization stuff to the fuel it knocks off another ~1 mpg
