My last carrier was a good one till it sold out. My present one, Fremont Contract Carriers, is darn good. Great working atmosphere, good customers, and great business model.
I have found that the better places for O/O are with the smaller carriers, say, 100-300 trucks, give or take a few. They tend to be just large enough to have a decent customer base, but small enough so that they know your name. They tend to be more responsive to the needs of the individual driver. The contract I have with FCC is clear and concise. No mountains of hidden fine print nor full of all the legaleze that is hard to read. The "travel agents" in dispatch are required to have 80% of the trucks assigned to them preplanned on freight the next day before they can go home for the evening. The boss man does not want much more than 5% of our business with any one customer so that if a customer isn't shipping, it is easier to pick up the slack with other freight. The fuel surcharge is good and their are additional discounts on fuel when you purchase... usually .06 to .15 off the cash pump price a gallon depending on location. The company policy is an "out and back strategy". Whether you are on the Midwest Regional or the nationwide fleets, the target is to get every one home by the weekend. Works best with the Midwest Regional, but the national drivers get home most weekends as well. FCC does both vans and flatbeds.
There are a number of good companies out there. You just have to "beat the weeds" to find them. They are usually small and regional. The turnover is way below the big carriers by quite a margin, so it may take a little time to get on board with one of them. Whoever you begin to target for putting a truck on with, just make sure you really ask a lot of questions about them and check out their Safsat rating with FMCSA.
