My husband, so badly, since he was little has wanted to be a truck driver!! He is now 33 yoa (almost 34) and now has decided to do it. His brother-in-law is an owner-operator. Any advice on choosing a school in Indiana that is legitimate and will definitely give him a job? I've heard horror stories that after paying the $6000 most schools require, that you are not guaranteed to get a job, he has looked at Roadmaster. He would just love to get his CDL on his own, however we've heard through several people it is not possible to get a job, and through reading in Newspapers, everyone requires 6 mos-2 yrs experience. Any ideas on any companies that would take you just getting your CDL with no experience?

If not, can you give some advise on some good trucking schools and companies? He does have a prior DUI in 2001, any idea if that is going to be a problem for him? Also, he doesn't have a high school diploma or GED, will that hurt his chances?

Also, he is on unemployment, and I heard they would pay for people laid off by the RV industry only, I told him to check on it anyway, because he had left his job for personal reasons.. ANY ADVICE WILL HELP, THANKS!!

Hey and Howdy! Welcome to the forum. I hve eard that Roadmaster is a fair school, you can find some info on them here. It is not easy to get a job, unless you start with a small company, Local that needs a driver and is willing to train you, that being said most OTR companies will recurite from the good schools. He can always get pre hired before hw starts school, and even then that is no guarantee he will have a job after he finishes. God luck and I hope he is able to fulfill his dream.

    Wannabe,

I can't answer your questions about GED, DUI, etc., but I just finished school with Sage Technical Services in NC and am heading out to orientation with my new carrier this Friday. Sage seems to be one of the more highly regarded schools in the country. They have multiple locations around the country, including several in Indiana, according to their website. They are considerably less expensive than the $6K average that you mentioned, and I've found them to be honest and above board in everything they do. I've read posts on here from a half dozen or more drivers that have attended different Sage schools, and they all report being satisfied with Sage. You can google Sage Technical Services to find their site and get in touch.

The other recommendation I would make is to mention to Sage about the DWI and any other concerns you might have. Everyone there that I've dealt with will give you straight answers and not just take your money and then leave you hanging to find a job. If they think that the DUI or lack of a GED will keep your husband from finding a job, they'll be 'up front' about it and tell you just that.

As far as doing the CDL on his own, most companies will not hire an inexperienced driver unless they've attended a school.

Finally, Sage also offers placement services. My local school had recruiters visit from many companies that hire student drivers and most were very good companies that I had not heard of previously. Through their placement services, I was able to secure prehires from several different companies and, in fact, the company that I've decided to go with is one that I'd never heard of prior to school, and directly resulted from my having attended Sage. Your husband will not be guaranteed a job out of Sage, but they will definately put him in touch with companies that hire students. In fact, I would be very leary of ANY school that promises him a job straight out of school. They promise the training and they may promise that he'll leave school with his CDL in hand, but I don't know of any reputable school that will guarantee a job. Even if he chose a carrier based training program, they can't guarantee a job unless he 'successfully' completes their school.

    Good luck!

I'm glad I could be of assistance. Keeping in mind that I'm a very new 'newbie,' let me know if I may be of further help! Tell your hubby to keep the faith, I'm sure someone out there will give him a chance.
