Hello,
I have a cdl in hand and need to choose a company very soon. i dont have enough time to get a passport. I am in Philadelphia PA. I want to avoid Werner and Swift if i have a choice.
Does anyone know of a company I can start my career with 0 exp. and no passport? clean driving record and criminal back ground.
I thought pretty hard and decided to try for roehl, but i did research and found i need a passport. any ideas guys?
Good starter co. that dont require passport?

They may require a passport, but I feel pretty sure they will hire you without a passport under the assumption you can/will get one within 90 days of hire or something along those lines. And if I'm wrong and they won't hire you, I'd hate to see you "settle" only because you couldn't or wouldn't wait. They can expedite those in under 30 days I think for an extra fee.
Every ten years you have to surrender your passport to get your renewal passport, so you know they have drivers who are temporarily "passportless" from time to time for as long as 35-55 days for the typical renewal process. -
Just say your trying to get one.

Going to run canada. -
yea its not that i wont wait, I just CANT wait. i have a family to take care of and have just about no income and its been like that since i lost my job and decided to mae this change in my life and get my cdl, i need to get the ball rolling before its too late. you are right tho, no harm in at least applying.
I do remember while in trucking school a werner recruiter came in and on the list of requirements was a passport. I asked the recruiter if i wouldnt get hired due to the fact that i dont have one, and he said it wouldnt matter. I will send in an app and see what happens, but would still like to hear from anyone with first hand exp. with a good starter company.
Making the choice of who to go with has been exhaulsting. the more i read the more companies i find myself straying from, because so many bad stories. im trying not to let one persons bad encounter dictate my decision. but would love to hear some good stories lol -

Roadrunner, there is a passport office right in Philly, at the US Customs House, 200 Chestnut Street Room 103.
You can call 877 487 2778 24/7 to make an appointment and you can walk out with the passport the same day.
Also if funds are the issue, you can get a passport card for $30 that is good for land and sea travel between Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. I had a friend take a picture (just make sure its a white background) I uploaded it to a site and the processed it to the correct dimensions and sent it electronically to Walgreens. I went there and picked it up. It cost $7.95 I believe.
Back when I got out of the Army in 1985 I had an apartment and a job in Germany so I flew back after a short visit at home, I went and got a same day passport. It took all #### day but I was leaving within two weeks so I walked out of there that day.
Good Luck! -
Do companies want their drivers to have passports to do runs into just Canada, or is it for Mexico too? The last I read on the topic, Mexico is not like what it was 10 years ago. It's a really dangerous place for Americans (kidnappings, Etc.). I'd like to stay out of Mexico.

i dont recall doing research on any company that would require runs to mexico, if anything it would be optional. a lot of places do run canada though, and thats only if u end up with an account that runs canada. I just called roehl and they will let me get the passport after im hired.
