I finally broke down and upgraded to HugheNet satellite. It is soooooooo much faster than dial up and only cost me only $5 more since ATT jacked up their phone rates. Living in the country, your choices are limited.
I have to watch my usage though. I can schedule all my updates between 2am and 7am when it's free and I shouldn't have any problems.
I hooked up my router and the whole house is a hotspot now.![]()

Due to being single and on the road, there was no sense spending extra money. Now that I'm home, I can have the luxuries.
There's been cable and DSL about mile away since 1995. They just won't expand.
My brother tried to get broadband for about 5 years. They said they didn't have service there. One day he got a new neighbor and the neighbor invited him in. He had broadband. He showed him the wire on the pole outside.
My brother called the cable company back and they come back out. Oh? I guess we do have service out here. -
My parents live in the country, so I know your pain. They've had Wildblue for a couple of years now.

Welcome to hell !!!
You are about to become the proud owner of a .....brick.
My daughter uses HughesNet business. They are so disgusted with it, they are considering paying for the "last mile" of cable.
As a previous owner of Hughesnet myself. I'll never be one again.
I'll utilize a shotgun modem before I ever go back. -
i've had everything from Juno and Netzero back when both were FREE, to aol, and Verison DSL. Now I have Time Werner Cable Internet and it is the best thing EVER. I have never had a problem EVER in 4 years now, always crazy fast i love it. $60/month though I was paying $19/month for POS Verison service in VT, but i spent almost as much time on hold with tech suport as i did online.

So far I like it and stay within my allowance, no problem. I have most of my downloads scheduled when it's free.
I talked with a guy the other day and he said his never worked with cloud cover. I had my installed in the rain and watched the guy get a 94% signal. I been to satellite school and know the TV end. The guy was a good installer. That makes a big difference. If someone half arse tunes your satellite in and doesn't get max signal, it won't perform near as good.
I been through 4 days of rain/overcast and haven't lost a lick.
It's not good for voice over and gamers. I don't use that stuff. For what I do, it works great. That other customer said I could only watch two YouTube video's. I watched about thirty the other night no problem.
Since ATT jacked my single local computer line up to over $31, I was tickled to tell them to disconnect it. I only pay $30 for my cellphone.
One day they'll run DSL out here. I'll get that if it ever comes. There's nothing like cable. But I'll sacrifice living in the country.
The real deal is fiber optics. It's about 100 times faster than cable. Currently US is ranked #16 with only 6% using fiber optics. I think it was Denmark or one of them Scandenavian countries is all fiber optics. The US is way behind. Businesses rely on technology. -
Then I would go away for the weekend and come back to find my modem throttled down to dial up speed. They said I exceeded my bandwidth. I ask them how since I was 200 miles away and I took my wireless modem down. They had two accounts with the same site ID. They refused to help because I was on a wireless network.. They wanted me to be connected via LAN cable. So, I told them I had connected via a LAN Cable and they started to help me. Never moved out of my chair.
Their famous last words - Let's check the settings on your computer. Asked them why 4 computers were doing the same thing.
It was truly an 2 hour adventure with their tech support each time.

So far it's working great. 12 hour Norton updates take like 5 minutes now.
They gave me a status meter that shows my usage. I hardly use 10% if I stay away from video's. It serves me well so far. I know that is subject to change. I'm pretty sure I have new equipment most don't have.
I've been through some heavy weather and it only briefly went down during a very heavy rain storm with lightning. I usually shut down the electronics in a lightning storm anyways.
Time will tell. -
