Goodbye to trucking

    I got off the road about a year and a half ago to work locally at a copper mine. The mining industry (in my area) has gone bust due to the economy, so I found myself looking for a job. Trucking was always a good way to make money so I thought I'd give it another go.

    After being turned down by many companies because "1.5 million accident free miles isn't enough experience because of the time off the road":biggrin_2551:, it's time for me to say goodbye.

    Being home, sleeping in my own bed for 18 months has kind of spoiled me for O.T.R. anyway.

    Good luck and happy trails to all of you who are still out there putting up with the B.S. Maybe some day the industry will pay you for what you do.

    I know what you are saying Brother. I have 2.5 million Safe miles and have been off the road for 4 years. Might as well be a newb trying to get back on the road.
    I just decided to retire, enjoy the Grandkids, my easy life, my bike and spend my time volunteering at the fire Dept.
    Times have changed and we have to change with them too, I guess. Enjoy and Be safe...

    1.5 million accident free miles? WOW!! I am impressed! Congratulations! That is something to be very proud of! If you were closer to where I am, i could get you on with a good company in less than 10 minutes.

    Yes, 1.5 MIllion. over 700,000 of that with one company. Still, according to most of the companies I talked to, a year and a half off the road pretty much negates that experience.

    Oh well, talking with all these companies again has really just reminded me of many of the reasons why I quit driving anyway.

    It's not as if this is the only job I can do either, I've already got another job lined up that starts Thursday. It wont pay as much as I could make this year driving, but that point is arguable if you take into consideration all the time driving requires me to be gone.

    I'll land on my feet either way, it was just discouraging to be told that all the time I put in over the road is worthless to the trucking industry.

    It's because there are people making decisions that have likely never even been in a truck, let alone driven one. They sure like to think they know how to run a calculator though ... but even then, they really don't understand risk analysis.

    Well, it is a shame, but it sounds like you've already moved ahead, so I'll wish you luck. But please do give the forum the benefit of your experience.

    Exactly what I was going to say. First of all, congratulations on reaching 1.5 million miles of safe and accident free driving. All of that experiance may not mean anything to the trucking industry, but it sure means alot to folks here, as i'm sure you could provide some very valuable information.

    aren't you worried that if you don't come back that the trucking industry will collapse without you? for every trucking job opening, there are probably only about 10,000 people applying for it. and another 10,000 graduating from trucking university every week.
