Just Wondering who is building up some Detroits.
Seen the Cat thread and thought maybe we could get a Detroit thread going.
Mine is a 2000 detroit with A set of worked over injectors and computer with a Garrett GT4294 turbo rated up to 850 hp.Looking to do more work to the engine.
Future plans include:
1. Port and polish the head
2. Look into the poss. of installing bigger valves
3. Installing a cam from a Detroit 500
4. clean up the exhaust manifold and have ceramic coated
5. Take turbo apart clean up the turbo housings and have ceramic coated inside and out.
6. Playing with the intake manifold
As it is right now I pull a stepdeck and with an average gross wieght of 60-70,000lbs I get 6.8-7.25 mpg with a Classic and it preforms good.
but always looking for more.(power and mpg)
Anybody else playing with Detroit's?
Got a Cat thread how about a Detroit thread.

Thanks for starting this. I have a Detroit in a Classic too and I've been thinking about doing some mods ... all in the interest of getting better mileage of course.
So far the only thing done is the mechanic opened up the injectors a little.
What I am ultimately thinking on is to do up a pre-2003 (as mine is) and putting it into a glider. So, where is a reliable source for parts, information, etc. on hot-rodding Detroits? -
Check out some of the detroits on their website, as far as marine or generator applications and start crossing over parts. Thats what we do with CATs. You can drop some marine injectors right in, cams and turbos. I have seen one 12.7 put down 1260hp to the tires, but he was spraying a good shot of nitrous, i think off the juice he said it does around 950hp.
Dont try the marine ecm programs, they wont work in truck applications, well they will but not very well.
Post them up id like to see some hot 'troits, theres plenty of them out there! -
I went and looked at an Argosy with a Detroit in it today...
mmm.. the disease is still there -

Well this truck was not a highway truck it was more of a toy, i think he blew it up later with more fuel, scored the liners. I talked to his friend and he did 919hp without the juice, and it was pretty reliable.

So 550 do you know what the guy putting 900 to the ground had done to it to get that out of it?
-
Yes he had marine injectors in it and a very hot ecm with a big turbo of some sort, i dont know the specs on any of it, he didnt wanna reveal any of his secrets. All i know is he did what we do with CATs and looked for high power 12.7s, like marine applications and crossed some parts.
I think he made 1520hp on the juice with more fuel and he scored the liners on that dyno run. -
there was a truck I saw when I was younger that had a v 16 detriot out of a tug boat swaped into it an old silver pete I wish I new whatever happened to that truck uesd to see it every now and then but it has been a couple years
