For a fuel island attendant. I'm pretty excited. They'll train me to get my CDL then I start out in the fuel island fueling trucks and as I grow I can progress to other things. Any Publix drivers out there lurking? Anything I should expect? Any grocery haulers got any pros and cons about this part of the business? All input is appreciated. I hope I get the job keep your fingers crossed for me!!![]()

I think you got real lucky if you land the job. From what I've heard that is one of those jobs people retire with. Which DC do you have the interview with? My friend works at corporate in Lakeland doing computer stuff. He says there are old timers who spent their whole career at Publix who are gonna retire as millionaires because of all the stock they have. Seems they have some of the best benefits around.
The company I work for actually delivers fuel to their Lakeland DC, so I've talked to their fuel attendants some times (they have to babysit us while we unload their fuel). They say a lot of the drivers come from the warehouse after working there for 5-10 years and gain enough seniority to get a driver spot. The fuel attendants they had in Lakeland were mostly old retired truckers just doing part time work to get away from the house. But there was one who was in the same position that you mention, though he had a couple years of OTR under his belt. Only problem is I think he had to live off like $16/hr with a max 40hr/wk until he got the gravy driving job.
But the job is not like most food service. Since it's a private fleet you get a lot of little comforts other carriers wouldn't dream of giving their employees. My friend told me the store he worked at before moving to corporate, the driver didn't even unload his trailer. It was all done by the store employees (usually him). I'm sure if the company even allows the drivers to help unload, it would probably go a long way with some of the stores. I almost positive the fuel attendant I talked to said they get OT after 45hr? I think most of their trucks are governed at 64, but I have seen a couple in my time cranked up a little bit (maybe 68?).
OH AND WE CAN'T FORGET .... THEY HAVE THEIR OWN LACKEYS WHO FUEL AND WASH THEIR TRUCKS FOR THEM AFTER EVERY ROUTE.
Like .... what the fawk?!
I have to fuel and wash my own truck and I don't even get paid for it!
