I just returned home after a few days out of town. Turned on my computer and went to the kitchen to put the groceries away.

When I returned, I found my computer poping out pop-ups, my desktop picture changed to a very un-convincing 'bluescreen of death' and many of my admin functions locked.

I managed to get an anti-viral loaded by a friend but I just wanted to pass the word on. I'll be spending a lot of time this week repairing the damage to my system.

it's a SmitFraud type virus. (Wiki link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smitfraud

And here's where you must be carefull,,,

it directs your browser to a site that resembled Microsoft and tries to get you to "buy" the latest anti-virus software (AntispywareXP 2009) I don't know what they'd do with my credit information if I had given it, but I'm sure it would have been NOT GOOD.

So I just thought I'd share.

(PS if this is the wrong forum for this please fix, and I appologize in advance)

    leannamarie Thanks this.

I've ran into that one as well on my computer.. Ended up using 3 different spyware/adware removal tools to find and get rid of it all. Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, Adaware, and Spybot Search & Destroy. All are free and can be downloaded from www.download.com
