I'm a new CDL holder looking for work. I have one (only one) felony from 11 years ago. I have submitted 77 applications to date with no calls. I just got a call from Carolina Cargo (no surprise). I know they are called "Criminal Cargo" and have heard the bad rumors. I know they pay crap (.10 com). I wanted to know if anyone knows more about them than I do, such as how they pay, do they screw over their drivers, etc? I don't want more rumors, just known facts. I live in Delaware and they said I would have to drive to their terminal in Rock Hill, SC. I get 3 days off for every 3 trips I make to the west coast. I have the option of doing additional trips for more time off (ie 5 trips for 5 days off). But that's a 15 hour haul for me from here. I know I have to pay my dues to get into the industry and I'm willing to do that but at 15 hours away at only .10 cpm I think I'd be working just to work. By the time I pay for my gas getting there and back, daycare, daily living expenses, etc., I might have $200 left over for bills. It may be feasible but only if they pay on time and I'm not waiting around 2-4 days for loads. That's where I need to know more about this company and how they really work. Any 'real' input on them would be appreciated. Thanks!

Keep looking, you should be able to find something better. Maybe some of the big carriers plus leave out the felony unless they ask specifically for the information. It's over 7 years and should not be part of the deal.

We all "got a question". the title should be something more descriptive.
Anyway, if you have a clean driving record you shouldn't have to much trouble. What was the felony. I mean different crimes have different weight. Do you have recent work history? -
While waiting on 'real' input from ex's here's additional reading: http://www.indeed.com/cmp/Carolina-Cargo/reviewstruckon Thanks this. -
I like the way you put it, "I have one (only one) felony", you posted they pay .10 CPM is that true? holy crap, keep looking, 1 felony 11 years ago, pending your current MVR is not bad, you should be able to find something WAY better than .10 CPM, How is you driving record? any tickets? accidents?

77 is a lot of companies, you should have had a few bites.May I ask what the felony is?

Take the job. .10 cpm is for all miles the truck runs; doesn't matter if you're driving or sleeping, you're still getting paid for all miles. You're running West Coast turnarounds back to back. The pay isn't that great, but you will make between $700.00 - $800.00 per week from what other CC drivers have posted. You will be teaming say from the Carolinas to California to NewYork to Washington state to Florida to Oregon to Georgia to California and on and on. You're in a tough situation, so take the job and stick with it a few months.
Edit : you can save lots of money on road expenses by filling a small duffle bag with items such as:
Ramen noodles
canned tuna
canned soup
peanut butter
instant oatmeal
crackers
instant coffee
instant cocoa
plastic coffe mug with lid
instant drink powder such as gator aid
Hot water and use of a microwave is free at truckstops and many drivers do this.
Get this stuff at Walmart & Dollar General.
Take this with you from home to orientation; then you're ready to hit the road.DoneYourWay, fr8te_sh8ker and TruckDuo Thank this. -
10 cpm is like making $3-4 an hour. I'd work flipping burgers before I'd let someone railroad me like that. There are plenty of felons driving. You just have to look harder.
If the truck ran 6000 miles a week China that's only $600 before all the deductions. More like $400 take home pay before road expenses eating and stuff.chopper103in and Chinatown Thank this. -
I apologize if my header was too vague. I forgot to mention my DMV record...spotless now. Just over 3 years ago I had one ticket for following too closely. Nobody would touch me with that. In trucking that's like vehicular homicide or a DWI. It's gone now. Most people think that because my felony was 11 years ago I should be ok. Well, most companies go by the date you were released from probation. Going by that it was only 4 years ago so that's why I'm having such a hard time. Insurance companies won't bond me until I get to 5 or 7 years away from it. My dept of labor will bond me free of charge but it seems most companies don't want to be bothered with filing the paperwork for that. Trucking companies seem so desperate for drivers but they aren't very willing to bend a little to get them. I don't understand why they aren't willing to do a little paperwork to get me bonded free of charge to them and get a trucking moving. Seems a bit too lazy to me. Then again, I'm not educated on the intricacies of the trucking industry to know why they do, or don't do, a lot of things. The way things are going I may never know. But thanks to those who have responded so far. FYI, I read that Indeed.com forum several months ago. A few if them that posted there were prior management. I don't trust their opinions...too biased!

This is exactly what I'm thinking. Not to mention they want all of their trucks at the terminal during your home time. Either they are very paranoid because of who they hire, or it's 'slip seating,' or both. That means I would either have to drive from SC to Delaware for home time, or get a nasty cheap hotel for 3 days and end up divorced. I've tried looking for a local job driving a dump truck but I can't believe they want 2-5 years experience for that. I drove one when I was only 17. They are easy! I know it's their insurance carrier's mandate for a cheaper rate but...####! Even Waste Management wants a year. I've seen their drivers on the road. My 10 year-old son could drive better than most of them. It's such a bizarre industry.loves2truck Thanks this.
