Got a ticket at a rest stop in Cumby, Tx.

Because of folks like you, we can no longer stop at that rest area to do safety checks with oversize loads. We have had people blocking the shoulder of the ramp and refuse to move. At that exact rest area they even put rocks around the ramps because drivers were just driving off the road and parking in the grass with zero respect for any property damage.

 

Gotta admit, never thought about OS loads when I park. Just my ignorance. I'll keep that in mind.

I like to park by myself, so I don't usually hit truck stop or rest areas. I ususlly find an on ramp on an exit that has no houses or business.

 

You might contact the Hopkins County sheriffs office to determine if the Cumby police dept has jurisdiction at the rest areas. They supposedly extended the city limits of Cumby to take in the rest areas, but the sheriffs office will know for sure. If you are from out of Texas, they can only turn it over to a collection agency and Texas has a consumer law that gives them 4 years to collect, then they are not allowed to pursue further.

 

Fortunately, I live in TX. Doesn't help the ticket, but I wasn't expecting it would. Not even going to call the Sheriff. Like I said in the beginning, it was posted, I got a ticket. Thanks for the info though.

A $200 ticket is still cheaper than getting your hood ripped off at a truck stop. I’ll keep parking everywhere but…

 

I had a passing thought of talk about parking shortages, truck stops unwilling to clear my prepaid spot that I trip planned for and now am out of hours, the preponderance of CLOSED rest stops in the north, mid-west. Things like that. But, the response I got didn't surprise me at all.

I've been here a few years and have watched some of these drivers do the same to others. On the other hand I've gotten good information from these same drivers. No big deal.

 

I once got a parking ticket when I bobtailed to the DMV to renew my license .

Sorry that you were ticketed instead of just being told to move. You must have found a police officer with a short fuse for illegal parking or needed to fill the local "bank account ".

At least you are honest and truthful about the situation and owned up to your error. Most would have not taken the blame for their actions.

Your incident just proves the point that there is definitely a shortage of parking either public or private and it only gets worse. Keep your positive attitude and you'll overcome this glitch.

 

Yes, there are places where parking is harder to find, yes, there are days when I have to end my shift very late in a busy area, but with that said, after 5 1/2 years of being out on the road, I’ve never had to park in a spot where I wasn’t supposed to. Why? Because every single day I plan, sometimes those plans have to change, But I’ll immediately begin researching where I’m gonna end up and how I’m going to park. Not one time in 5.5 years! So I’d say personally there’s no excuse to be illegally parking. It’s just pure laziness. And to think there’s drivers out there that park like that almost every single day.

 

There was another thread on here warning about that rest area and how cumby tx pd was enforcing the parking ordinance they have there…fact is sometimes you have to adjust where you are going to park and even have to at times park sooner thsn you expected..it’s trucking things happen daily that require trip planning adjustments
