Sadly, if you were a farmer with in state plates and likely no DOT#. You would have no ticket.

At least that is what it is like up here in MN and IA. Farmers can get away with almost anything up here. Heck, 1 out of 10 hopper trailers I see up here don't even have plates. Insurance? Your guess is as good as mine.

Yet the DOT up here will nail any OTR truck with a blemish on the return airline hose. It's hardly believable!

+1 They dont even have enough sense to have extendable mirrors so they can see if anybody or anything is along side them.

The easiest way is to find out is call the state in question. Brokers dont know anything.

Any load over 102" (8' 6")wide requires a permit in most states. Some states do exempt agricultural products from some of the laws we must deal with in this business.

your load can be 102 on a 96 trailer and be legal. its when you go over 102 that it is oversize.

Trailers that are 102 wide are allowed 2 inches of overhang on each side and still not illegal, live load beds on 102 flats have two inches between the live load area and the rub rail. most flats that are 102 wide by speck are 106 inches total overall width, depends on the manufacturer.

So, if your load does not extend past the rub-rails I have found they do not mess with you.

I know that superhauler, my point was three questions to ask yourself is it wider than trailer, longer, or taller than 13'6 van. If so and your not sure this would give you the flag that says, hey maybe i should find out if i need a permit. not trying to get technical. If you are going to qoute me im fine with that, but make sure you understand my statement before you quote me. you guys are to quick to try and point someone out for being wrong. Yes maximum allowable width is 102", you can have a 102 load on a 96 trailer. Put that 102" load on that 96" trailer and drive down a non key words here "non 102 roadway" and its illegal. would you get caught probaly not. but again that is not what my reply was about. my statement was clearly saying things that might throw up a flag , and make you double check your requirements.
