I got my class A last month, tried 1 over the road company, that life is not for me, so I decided to try local, whitch is hard because my MVR will not be clear until April, have an accident with a violation for the accident on it, I found a local mon-fri 27 foot straight truck job, getting experience on hi-lo's, loading my own truck, making deliveries, and it can be some work at times because some loads are like tearing apart pallets, and cramming them on tiny elevators and crap like that in 0 degree weather, but some of the deliveries are easy. The pay will keep the bills paid, so it is all good for now.
It is kinda a bummer having a class A and not using it, but I am just not going otr. Figure in May I will have a perfect MVR, a few months under my belt of limited experience, but I will know a lot more than I did before anyway, then I will search for a decent local class A-B local job with a better long term future.
Not the best job, but it actually does pay more than the otr companies start for the first year, I see my family, and friends, and driving this truck is easy, a little tiny 27 foot 5 speed. I have a trainer, mainly to show me the ropes, because the driving is a piece of cake. Not the start I wanted, but I am home, I can clean up my record, and then pursue a better long term local job.![]()
Got my first trucking job! Not what I want yet though.

Mr Big Bad,
Most states, after 3 years accidents & minor traffic tickets drop off your personal DL......but the DOT requires 10 years of history for hiring Class A drivers, and now that you have had a job in the trucking industry, and a DAC was run, they now hold a 10 year record and anything on that report that they ran at that time, this will be your driving record for the next 7-10 years as far as trucking companies are concerned(10 year history + current DL Information)...not your state DL record......so what I'm saying is, that if a driving record is what is holding you back on local work, even though it may drop off your personal state DL, DAC will hold that record it collected from your first transportation job (This past month when you went to orien) for 10 years. Just some food for thought, not trying to be a smart***. I learned this from a friend who is a recuiter for a large trucking company.
Many local companies will tell you they do not run a DAC, they may not...... but they run a Unisis report(their insurance company requires in all 50 states), providing a thorough backround from many sources including DAC ( A Parent Company). -

Well most companies require 23, which would give them 7 years history..... they can not go back further then there is history...lol But as you gain driving expereince, they will always track back a min of 10 years. Some companies go back further, the feds min in 10 years. Some will not hire with with a DWI ever in your history!! Jon

I have the same question as darkhorse!
Besides the fact that there are alot of idiots out there, you probably spent alot of time sitting for loads, you can't find a truck stop parking space if you get there after 5pm, and the CB will drive you nuts, what didn't you like? -
I have heard from NEI trainers back in 95 that 85 percent of all graduates from cdl schools are no longer driving otr after one year. It probably the fear, anxiety, stress, and just wanting to be in their comfort zone. Not everyone can adapt to OTR and become comfortable out there. The first year is the one that makes or breaks all truck drivers.

You can get a 10-yr no matter how long you've been driving. I didn't have any license a whole year before I became a truck driver but I could still ask the DMV for my 10-yr printout.
