Went to my Doctor and got my medical card today. Left there and went on to the DMV and took the General Knowledge test, Air Brakes, Tanker and Doubles. Passed them all first try. Woot!! I start school Monday. I know I could have waited and done that all there but I was concerned about the physical and wanted my Dr to do it and I really didn't think I would pass the permit test. Im going to go ahead and start the back ground check process for Hazmat and should be ready for it by the time I finish class.

So what is your concern about the physical? You do know most companies will still make you get a physical from their doctors right? If you have some serious problem. You might want to hold off shelling out all that cash for Hazmat until you are sure you can pass most physicals.

Yes I know but thank you for the information. The understanding I get from looking around and talking to drivers is that even if i'm pulling a 53' box, its good to have the hazmat endorcement.

Make copies of your long form and medical card. Some states require the long form and trucking can be hard on copies. Keep one copy at your home.

Starting the Haz-mat process and also the TWIC process can make you more employable but the cost add up. As long as you can afford it, there is nothing wrong with your approach. There are many companies that will as Dinomite says have you re take the physical. Many never use the hazmat or twic cards. As you start focusing on what areas of trucking you want to do, having all the stuff gives you options. I think we all get doubles and triples but very few of us drive them. And none of us would if we had any sense.

Put your location on your profile. And welcome to trucking.

By and large getting my TWIC has been a big waste of $$. I've hardly used it so far and it's been a year. And I haul chemicals so you'd think they would want to see it a lot, but not in my experience. So my input is to hold off on it. Don't be too hasty to get it. I put it down to more Govt drama and BS than anything else for $129
