My story: California, the truck stop I was going to was full. Only had 19 minutes left to drive. Found an on-ramp with a nice large dirt area along the ramp, and I parked. CHP knocked on my door at 1am and gave me a citation for non-emergency stop on freeway. Officer advised me to "get dressed and move the truck" but I told him I could not do this because I was taking my 10 (for some reason he acted surprised). He also told me that another officer could be coming around later and giving me another ticket (as of right now I have not moved because I LEGALLY CANT, but so far no other citations).

The officer also told me I should have parked at the Chevron gas station near the on ramp instead. I seriously doubt they have truck parking at that little gas station.

And BTW there is NOTHING ELSE AROUND HERE! It's not like I had options on where I could park. I could have made it to the next weigh station (maybe) but California does not allow trucks to park at weigh stations.

And I was not the only driver parked here who got a citation. All 4 of us got a citation.

So, what can I do about this? How much is the fine? Can I fight this or am I screwed?

And I have been driving for 26 months, first and only citation.

It’s not a moving violation, pay the fine and move on. Consider it a reserved parking fee.

parking fines don't carry points. however, if you do not pay, they can "boot" the truck, and that'll cost way more than the parking ticket.

and should you get a different truck and another driver is assigned it, and it gets booted, the possibility could exist, your company will hold you responsible, when they do a search as to who it was assigned to, according to the dates.

these days any thing can be possible.

depends on his home state. some states see it as disobeying official traffice device/sign. same as running a red light. its always about what his home state words it

You could have used Personal conveyance to move. There is a drop down line that says force to leave. That will keep you off duty. You have to stop at the next available parking area.

I have had to use it. One time it took me going through three different parking area to find one with parking. Had an inspection two days later. Nothing was said about it. Drove a total 18 miles.

You can always move the truck for safe parking. You should have stopped way before you reached 19 minutes left on your clock. Relying on a spot at the one and only truck stop in the area isn't the best idea.

Pay the fine, use it as a lesson and move on.

Parking on a ramp/shoulder should never be a option. Especially in a sue happy state like California.

IVe never seen a parking ticket issued to anyone but the truck owner. I’m surprised the cop even knocked, they could have just stuck the ticket on the window.

I had the samething happen in Virginia. Pull over at the rest stop with 15 mins left on clock. Used pc to get to the next rest stop a hour away. Full too. Parked on on ramp with a line of trucks. 30 mins into my 10 hr an officer gave me a ticket told me to keep movin. Told him I'd already pc'd an hour. He said doesnt matter keep pc'ing till you find a spot. He then went on to start giving the rest of the trucks there a ticket. Next stop was about 30 mins away, a loves, full. Next rest stop about a hour from there. FULL. Next truck stop was a ta about a hour from there. They had some paid parking all in all I used 4 hours of PC!
