    And buy a darned CB Radio.

    I'm starting a run into the hills for a BP (as in British Petroleum) Project and have to use a CB to call up and down the hill when I'm moving.

    I didn't have any plans on buying one. Don't know the FIRST thing about one... actually, I do... Gonna get the Cobra 25 or LTD. After that, no clue...

    Kinda spur of the moment too. I gotta have this all up and running tomorrow. Been up since 0145 this morning (1720 now) and my brain cells don't feel like reconing this Project.



    So I'm callin on someone, anyone, that feels like helping me out.
    Basically, what I need to know, is what all I need to get - (as in EVERYTHING) because my truck has no antennae nor mount. There are SOME sort of wiring going on up in the over head area but I know nothing on it yet.

    I figure, I'll put this thread out here, gather what I can from (hopefully) contributors and then drive over to the yard tomorrow morning and see what the wiring situation is. I'm scheduled to make a run up into the PA back woods after dark so I got SOME time tomorrow but I need to nap before I go :)

    I would get the Cobra 29 instead of the 25 simply because it has an SWR meter function which will make it easy to check your antenna system as opposed to blowing even more money on a separate meter and jumper. Many rag the quality of the built in meter but it is more than good enough to get you going as cheaply as possible and talking decent distances. You pic is too far away I cannot see the door close up to give you an idea on the antenna. If you can mount a bracket to it you might consider one of those $30 kits (at the bigger truck stops hanging on the wall) with a 4 foot generic clone of a Firestick along with a mirror bracket and coax. That gives you all you need, get someone to help you hook up the power, or at least buy a cheap test light to prevent accidentally hooking up the power in reverse. Remember red goes to positive.

    I'm not driving that truck now. I'm currently driving a '99 International Day Cab.

    I was leaning towards the 29LTD. Gonna hit the yard first thing in the morning and get squared away.

    Got it, red is hot :)

    not in a international if it doesnt have posts there will be green and white wires, green is hot, white is ground.

    Very true you cannot trust the color of wires in the truck. That is why I mentioned taking a test light along. But on the red thing I was talking about the power cord to the radio. Red it is.

    Had to buy a cheap Radio Shack CB for the day.

    A mechanic helped me hook it up. Everything lights up, all the wires (including coaxial/antenna were pre-existing) so it was basically plug&play!

    Until I tried to get someone on it. Nothing.

    Lights come on, the RX/TX light up. RX stays lit. Unless I'm holding the mic button, then RX goes out and TX comes on.

    I'm thinking it may be the antenna. Either way, I'm taking that RS brand back tomorrow and picking up a Cobra from one of the local TS's.

    Antenna problem most likely. Doubtful CB was bad but possible. As I mentioned before, the Cobra 29 will give you the meter to find out about the antenna, which is most likely your problem. Seldom do you get in an 18 wheeler with no antenna problems.

    The money spent on the separate meter/jumper will yield you better results.

    OP the Cobra 25 is a perfect starter radio. So is the Uniden PC 68. Pair either of those to a Wilson 2000 using some RG8X coax, and tune for an SWR reading of 1.5:1 on channels 1 thru 40 (or 19 if you never plan to use any other channels) and you're good to go. ``

    Guys...

    It WAS (quite likely) the Radio.

    We hooked up a 29LTD to the same truck/wires and it came to life worked peachy.

    I'm gonna pick me up a 29LTD tomorrow or Sunday. Gotta run tomorrow morning.
    BUT the good news is we left the Cobra in my truck for now.

    Now, about this "tune for SWR". How do you tune it on the 29LTD? My mechanic manager "tuned" it already but I THINK it's hittin almost 3 on the scale when I key up. I don't think it's got a lot of range on it either, but it does work. I think it's only hittin a mile tops.
