hey new to the forum....ive wanted to be a truck driver like my daddy for a long time, now im finally just about old enough

im 20 years old, will be 21 in november which is when ill actually be able to start driving

im just about to start my CDL training at Sage through Ivy Tech here in Indianapolis.....pretty excited about it

im a dockworker at ups freight(formerly overnite), the only way to get full time status is to get a CDL...my pay will more then double in 2 years time and i will actually get benefits

anyways cant wait to start school, already have a head start in my opinion cuz i already know how to back trailers pretty good, but only in a yard jockey truck which are automatic and u can cut them sharper then regular trucks...i jockey a few times a week at work...plus i already have a DOT physical on file and just got my CDL permit on wednesday

i should have my CDL in about 6 weeks from now, then i will wait until i turn 21 and get my hazmat and doubles/triples endorsements...will be studying for that until then

im looking to stay local, we have a strong teamster contract and good hourly pay and benefits

anyways yea theres my introduction, you all will be seeing me around here, never knew this website existed

Welcome aboard. Good luck getting your CDL. It will take a small adjustment period to get used to backing in with the bigger truck, but you do have a leg up on the other "students" I believe. I'm sure you've been told before, but UPS/Overnite is a pretty good company. I'd try not to #### it up! LOL

I had a friend that drove for UPS hauling triples out west. He made very good money and his trip was all laid out everynight. He'd drive for so long take a break then drive on. I would always meet him going the other way and you could set your watch to his schedule.

I'd get a little ahead and pull over on this one turnout and he'd come up and shout at me on the radio to get up and get going. He's most likely retired now because he had many years way back in 1991 but he had the perfect run.

It might take some getting used to, but you'll be ahead of the game by just knowing the basics of backing a trailer, that part is the same no matter how big or small the vehicle is.

I've got a buddy that never set foot in a truck til abour a year ago but he can back circles around most guys out there... he grew up on a farm backing hay wagons and farm equipment since he was 5.

I am well aware how Overnight totally screwed up the United Parcel Services (UPS) but I'm sure they still have that run and that driver never retired as a feeder driver. He was a line driver from Tonopah to Las Vegas and back hauling triples. When you speek for your area make sure it's not different somewhere else. Most of the times it is.
