Yeah and they didn't have spring brakes. To make them stay put, you had to have air pressure in it's tank, and pull out this knob that would lock up it's service brakes. We always had to chock their tires because if one of them loses it's air, it would take off and those dollies weigh like 3000 lbs. They'd kill somebody if it ran 'em over.

ive seen a runaway dolly before in our yard....it jumped out of the pintle hook on the tractor (most of them are junk because they only are used to pull dollys around the yard) and the road driver was too lazy to hook even one chain to the tractor......it could have easily killed somebody

Quick story for all to enjoy about couches : Our guy was on a trip and during this trip he broke the company speed limit by 2 mph for 1HR thereby gaining 2 miles. Gets close to the terminal and falls in behind a Saturday mover...moving a couch on the state hwy. Couch falls off pick up and our guy destroys it...had no choice.

Company convenes accident board. 4 drivers, safety and the TM to rule p / np.... drivers vote n/p....TM overrides and votes preventable.

    Why?

" If he hadn't been speeding back there then he wouldn't have been here to hit the couch " No sheet.......

    The couch incident......

Those jiff loc dollies/tag axles also had an air ride system in order to raise or lower the axle to adjust for weight. Controlled from inside the cab w/ a air gauge which was set around 60psi on the cab gauge. Never had much trouble hooking one up. But did get a ticket once cause the air bleed off and did not see it as I crossed the scales. I must own at least 1/2 mile of interstate from all the tickets over the years.
