Are those GPS systems like the $300-$400 Rand Mcnally helpful or necessary for local drivers in CA? Or are they more for OTR drivers?

This doesn't really address your question, but I use an android GPS app that routes for trucks. It works great, but I'm OTR.

You can try Copilot for for free couple day. Maybe even better the new app from this website. I have not used it much but it free

Copilot is in the Google play store. It hit and miss on local roads. It have live traffic update and road closures so that helps. It had lots of custom setting like you can tell it never use road that have speed limit of 20MPH. I find the actual address location is off. So I won't take you to truck entrance. I can be off that could be a deal breaker running local

I think a gps is helpful when doing local runs. It alerts me immediately of truck restricted roads and low bridges.

I have a Garmin 780 and smart truck route 2 app (has google earth and traffic). I also use my atlas.

Atleast here in the north east I have a garmin. Its helpful but like everything its just a tool. I find running local were I know the area it will route you on a longer route than necessary.

Google maps is great, but also use it in with google earth. If you have any particular questions about the route you can zoom in to particular spots and get a 3D view

I'm a local LTL city driver and all I use is Google Maps. No need to buy anything extra, Google is free and really all you need.
