I tried searching for an answer but didn't come up with anything, and i'm not a trucker either but thought this forum would be the best place for this question. When using a GPS unit in the truck, is it legal to have it placed on top of the dashboard or stuck to the windshield? Would it be better to have it stuck to the top of the windshield to minimize obstructing the view of the road?

From what i read so far, it sounds like there are specific GPS units for truckers and big rigs, but i'm assuming they are of similar size and function to GPS units for cars. Is there even a way to secure it to the windshield, like a suction cup?

Depending on the unit most come with suction cup to stick to window. Garmin I have also came with sticky thing to attach to dash or other ferrous surface. When I use mine I just stick it to dash. I haul a lot of permitted loads so you take the route they assign you. But when looking for back haul load in odd ball place will break it out to see if it helps find location. There are specific units for trucks. Some are large w/mounts. they are too large for windshield mounting. I am no expert on GPS. And we work in a lot of small towns so bridges and other stuff are not as big a problem. I do like the Garmin best of the ones I have used by far.
