GPS suggestions

I have a Tom Tom off of Ebay. Paid 37.00 It's color, but don't put on a floor show. You get distracted with an 18 Wheeler, people die!

 

I have Android phone and use Google navigation it free but not truck specific.

 

Try the search on this site. This question has been asked a lot.

 

word of advice...DO NOT fully trust ANY GPS re: low clearances etc....always double check your atlas...

 

Use your smart phone.

 

The WorldNav GPS is the best in my opinion. Look it up online. You can also find a video on youtube telling you everything about it and how it works. If you want to see the video go on youtube and put Truck GPS Presentation - WorldNav's GPS For Truck Drivers. Then you will see it.

 

What unit would you recommend?

 

Husband has a Roadmaster he bought at Pilot, it was around $375.00. It is trucker specific, keeps up with hos, has major fuel stations (Pilot, Fly J, Love's, Petro, TA). It will or one like it will hopefully keep him out of trouble. They are handy maneuvering areas with a lot of by passes when traveling in larger cities, etc. The route should be studied real well on paper and on the unit so he has it in his mind; there are a lot areas under construction and they may have moved the road where the unit keeps trying to get you to turn off somewhere, if you know you aren't supposed to turn of hwy 80 for a 100 ml it helps to ignore it.

We used a garmin when I rode with him for a year but it was not a truck variety and it had to be tweaked in by via points along the way,. I would then go by company specific road directions to shipper/receiver and try to keep it to bigger roads in and out. Also looked over the trucker atlas in front for low bridges, etc.

 

I bought my husband a Cobra 5550 pro about a year and a half ago. It runs I believe for $299, and it is a truckers route with options of bypass tollways, close fuel truck stops, hos, and some other things. You do have to pay $45 dollars a year to upload the current navigation to make sure that all roads and tollways are updated. He loves it because it helps him out tremendously, but he still uses the Truckers Atlas to double check his route especially if he needs to find an alternative route.
