Just wondering if anyone has any experience with Comericial GPS units? I google searched a few and the running theme seemed to be they would take you into the middle of a field and tell you that your there. Does anyone have any good experiences with acertain brand or any recommendations of any i should consider when i go to get one. I dont want to drop 400 bucks on a P.O.S.

    Thanks

Gps is a tool. Never trust any of them. Always use your head. If you're going to get one I recommend Rand McNally.

Just because you have a gps doesn't mean you don't need a map book remember that GPS is only as smart as the person who programmed it

My GPS tip is to buy a Rand McNally Motor Carrier Road Atlas and always check your route with that also before you start your trip. You'd be surprised how many time you'll find the need to change your route from what the GPS says.
As far as the best GPS unit, you'll find that every driver has his or her own favorite unit. My personal favorite is a Garmin, but only because I've always used that brand, and I'm used to the map screen. But even their GPS is wrong from time to time.

rand or garmin diezel are best. always call shipper and look it up on google maps and hit satalite view. it will give you the real picture of what the place looks like. the gps is only gonna tell you where it is not how to get into the place.

Yea, what he said too. You'll learn to love the Google guy. Great tool for truckers.

You could always just buy the software and load it on to your smartphone, laptop and/or tablet. If you have an iPhone, you can load the same software onto an iPad for free and vice-versa. The same applies to running an Android based phone/tablet. The software can be loaded onto multiple Android/Apple devices (phones/tablets), but it is not cross-compatabe, meaning that the Android version cannot be loaded on an iPhone/iPad and vice-versa. For a quality truck GPS software, I would recommend CoPilot Truck, since it is powered by PC Miler. For about $150, you could have multiple GPS devices, depending on the platform you are running as previously described.

I have the CoPilot Truck software, though I do not need it often due to the Qualcomm unit in the Walmart trucks having built in PC Miler navigation. Very good software.

You can also do like we did in the olden days and just buy a Rand McNally Motor Carrier atlas and do your own routing. :)

Friend, If you are going OTR, than go with the Rand McNally. For me it has been a worthwhile investment over the years !
