From just what you have typed, it looks to be processor and or RAM related. As you shut down unneeded features, it frees up memory. Its the same thing as shutting off unneeded processes on your computer to speed it up. Your unit may just have a bad "connection" from one part of the "board" to the other. Increasing processor speed and available RAM would make thing better for you.

RM runs Beta testers which I oversee. All different types of trucks, under different types of road conditions. I have not had any reports of this issue yet.

Slightly squeeze the USB end of the DC cord to provide a more snug fit.

Another thing I found when driving was to take the tong off a plastic fork and slide it between the DC connector and the socket. This does help hold the connector in the socket.

Running the different items uses processing power. But, if the main cause is power, then yes you are jumping between DC and battery power. If the battery is not fully charged then it will affect power and to the user it will look like freezing, lock-ups, black screens, etc.

If you wish I can look at your TND along with the power cables. PM me.

    Thanks,
    mark

What do you mean you've heard no reports of this? Go back to your TND thread and read where I told you there were many reports of this. Both from me and listed at other sites like Amazon. You and Dezlboss told me it wasn't happening on the 510.

I'm not intersted in having you look at it anymore. My garmin does a wonderful job, I just keep the 510 around as a plaything. Its always good to use to show my students why not to depend on a GPS. They might break down, then what do you do?

One of my students bought a Cobra, and it did a pretty good job also and the price was more affordable.

I have been following the Rand thread since I bought the TND 700 2yrs ago and came to the conclusion that the TND 510 and 710 were a disaster prob due to manufacturing and quality control issues.
I have both 700 and 720, one in my wife's truck the other in mine and can truthfully say have had very few issues with the units themselves. My only beef right now is map and routing accuracy. All the gps units out there right now are Truck Friendly and not Truck Specific which is part of the problem with all of them.
It appears, from reading all the posts on gps, that the Garmin might be better at routing accuracy but the Rand has more bells and whistles so what is more important??
Untill someone comes out with a truck specific gps unit all of them will leave something to be desired.
At this point in time I would prob try the Garmin if I needed to get a new unit although I do like the Rand but the quirky routing I have been getting is not acceptable.

The 710 is the one with the DC cord/TND connector issue. This was caught early on and a more stable DC cord was then put in packaging. If you had an earlier one, you could have called into CS and they would have replaced it.

The 510 never had the DC cord/TND connector issue. This is what DB and I were saying.

Now if you have a 510 that you suspect might have a Power connector issue, I will gladly send you a shipping label and look at it internally, road test it and check file(s) integerity.

I would also request your DC and AC connectors so that I have everything that you have in your truck to try to duplicate the issue.

Let me know if you wish me to look at this for free, no strings attached.

One other thing you might note. Don and I both have electronics backgrounds. Mine is about 25+ years. Don and I do this for a living, day in/day out, testing, resolving issues, etc etc. Those who post on other sites might have a TND for a day or a week and post a "review" of that item. Don spends three weeks doing a lengthly in house/driving test for his reviews. I test daily on whatever issues drivers or testers may find.

I do not just sit at a desk typing answers to questions. I have been with the TND since 2008. I know all the quirks to each model.

Both Don and I have driven OTR, so we both know how it is in a truck.

If you have an issue with your unit, so long as you wish me to be on top of the issue then I will. Yours has gotten to the point to where I need to physically see your TND as it is now and look at the hardware and software to see where the issue is.

    Thanks,
    Mark

I've been experimenting with my rand McNally tnd510, and I've found it only freezes when I'm using the 3D map. If I use the 2D map, it doesn't freeze. And when I say it freezes I mean it's like a screenshot even though I'm still moving. I'm about ready to give up and buy a new one.
