GPS with ability to adjust route

If my gps gives me a different route ill just set waypoints along the route I want to take and tell it to navigate to those points. Me and my gps tend to argue a lot over which way is best lol

 

Hey do trucker gps automatically adjust the route if you go a different way than what it's suggestion? Like my built in navigation in my car?

 

Like Milk says set waypoints by known directions. The one I had built in the dash of my Pete you could set it up before hand with waypoints or legs. That comes specially helpful with multi-drops or if the GPS doesn't know the right way into a town. The Garmin Nuvi I have now you have to enter the start and stop. Any deviations you touch the screen at that point and it asks if you want to go there or detour there. You just press detour and it continues you on to your final destination via that point. Also on my Garmin to preview the route it will give you the street name for the first turn up at top of the screen. Press it and it gives you a route preview. So basically you have to learn how your GPS operates and you can make it do what you want it to do.

Yes they correct. If there is only one way in a town it will turn you around instead of detouring you in another way. GPS's are only good as the one's that programmed it. Most are Navteq software that has been modified. A trucker GPS will know many routes but not all of them like a small town with two exits off the interstate leading to it. The GPS might not know that because it isn't broadcasted.It is only known through local signs. The programmer doesn't know it because his source of info is from other literature.

It doesn't matter the GPS, a driver needs to do his homework and compare the routing. It's kind of like I know the right way. You just give me advanced directions ahead of time. It's nice knowing which lane to be in ahead of time or finding places to stop at. I even used a GPS in fog or bad weather to give advance warning of curves or T-stops. You can zoom in and be accurate within 10 feet. They serve many functions.

I've gotten stuck at places and used a GPS to order takeout before.

 

And any GPS is only as good as it's last map update. And even GPS's with lifetime map updates can be missing roads if they weren't in the latest update.

And I, like Condo, have used my GPS to find a nearby Pizza place to have food delivered.. They're handy tools.. If used correctly with a strong dose of common sense.

 

google on your phone works really good at showing ALL restaurants in a radius. but if that's beyond someones comprehension. there's also an app called YELP.

as for straing off course. gps will eventually stop telling you to turn around and reroute you.

 

i don't mind an argument once in awhile with my gps.

it's when it's smoking crack and doesn't share that pisses me off.

I have been using the RM 710 for over 2 years now without any complaints. It usually provides great directions and or course it provides most local amenities like food, WAL MART, Harley Davidson shops, etc.

Even with all that technology I still talk to receivers/shippers and get local directions into towns/facilities, you know, specific stuff (2nd right after the broken tree, etc). More importantly, I verify the GPS routing with my atlas, just to keep me out of trouble. Any GPS can go array !!

 

Thanks for the reply. In my research, I think I will go with the RM brand. And yes, I get that you ALWAYS double check against the atlas. Thanks for that link. Is that one the laminated version?
