Swift currently has a hiring freeze until January. That's unheard of! Trucking companies are finally weeding out the undesireables because now they can afford to. You had better have a good, clean record and an impressive job history if you are now considering truck driving.

I just parked my own authority after 5 successful years. Freight has dried up, and I mean really dried up. I leased me and the truck onto Schneider of all places. So far so good, rates hovering around $2 a mile, 500 and 1000 mile trips. Short haul miles up to $5. They still have freight, but they to are in a hiring freeze of sorts. The school for newbies is closed till things pick up, and they are weeding out the dead weight. Both on the contractor and company end.

Funny thing is, all of the terrible things one hears about Schneider, I know I have, but I just don't see it. They have been very honest and upfront regarding their whole program for independent contractors. And from what I can tell, for the company drivers that I went through orientation with. Not that I have been through many orientations, but I was impressed. And so far so good.

    I just hate the orange.

Swift is in a hiring freeze right now. Even the "crappy" companies have gotten very picky. It is hilarious when companies like Stevens say we have pretty high standards. Companies are going to treat there people pretty bad right now because they can, there is not much work out there. I know CR England is hiring. If you can put up with them for a year you can come out with some experience and hopefully by then the economy will be better.
