Back in the day they'd be on the radio trying to sell their CB or TV/VCR combo just to make it to the next oayday. In payday, they'd buy another one. In a week, they were selling it.

When I worked for a small tank outfit, we told the new owner operators to buy hoses from the Chem Leaman and Matlack drivers. We had three 50' hoses rolled to fit the spare tire rack when they needed long lengths of hose. Nobody would steal them.
I watched a company guy get caught. They were a slip seat operation; 15 min to get out the yard but paid to oil and fuel the truck at the end of the day. This guy had a 5 gal can he would fill every night to take home and dump in his heating oil tank.
One day the terminal manager was out in the yard and observed him from a distance as he filled the can and transfer it to his car to take home. Lost a union gig over that.25(2)+2 Thanks this. -
I just told you what I'm told, however if it is a case where a fleet is screwing around with taxes, like two or three trucks from a farm, I can see them doing it but for an owner with one truck, not likely unless something is really wrong. -

He replied: Wasn't me. I got pulled over by an unmarked Mustang about five years ago. It took a while to get some fuel out as the low fuel light was already on ( 06 3500 Dodge ). Do not remember who got how much but about 2100 dollars. Some to the state and some to the feds.
Called another guy for reference: No but I did see this. I was running down the interstate and see this car slide in and hang out on the right side. He had some kind of wand held out by my exhaust. Finally I applied some brakes and he waived as he blew on by.
They had off road fuel tanks in the bed but one of my trucks, F350 ,tested in SC did not. They did not say anything about the expired trailer tag. The new one was on my desk. -
My experience, and I've had more 5han my share 2nd hand is you don't mess around with dyed fuel for on hwy use.
Some people I knew well had a construction business and they sold every diesel pickup and car they had when they made off road dyed. Not worth the risk to them.
A company I worked for had engines for pumps and compressors truck mounted with separate tanks, and purged those separately tanks of dyed fuel, again, not worth the hassle, it was better for them to file for a refund for off road use than to be shut down for answering the question.
My company buys off road fuel for the refrigeration units, and there are places that sell it at the pump. They'll take fuel mistakenly put in on road tanks and put it in the off road tanks if you give it to them.
The dilution factor is quite high, I'm not sure exactly where it disappears, but I'm guessing a fraction of a percent of dyed fuel will still appear as red, so the bypass from the injection process will contaminate the undyed fuel in varying amounts of time.
I cringe when someone uses dyed fuel for anything related to on road like priming a filter or anything else.
Not worth the risk.
As for expropriation of fuel for personal use, remember, there could be eyes everywhere.
Not worth it if you get caught. And you just might.
