any one know of this school. i am debating going here. It is possible that i can get training free. just want to hear from people that have been thru it. By the time i start i will be 48. I am a big guy 350lbs but working my but off to lose it. I have no tickets or accidents in last 5 years and no felonies. Trucking was not my first choice but the more i read and see , the more i think it is for me.

    Hmmmm....

My Brother-in-law went here and now does a dedicated run delivering produce and stuff for Mark's stores etc....

I'm looking at these guys too but, they are not PTDI certified. They do offer a lot of training programs. The owner is related to the owner of Hamrick TDS. Looks like they started around 2007.

NO GLTDS grads going to speak up here??? :biggrin_2556:

yeah the thing that gets me to get grant they have arranged with 2 carriers to get a prehire that have no intention of hiring you just so you get grant.

i mentioned that crete only hired ptdi drivers that are new and they claim that crete hire from there now, i am calling crete tomorrow. along with a few others

I sent in their application yesterday. After reading some forums, I'm concerned no one may hire a new driver. I had previously sigined up through Driver Solution to train at C1 in Indy and sign up for USA Trucks. People threw such a fit about that being a CDL mill and a bad company that I decided to go the same route as my brother-in-law.

I love to drive and already worked 10-12 hrs a day as an electronics tech. If I can find an opportunity I know I can make this work. I know the lifestyle is not optimum. I want to try it so I'm going to spend $5200 of savings for the GLTDS premier option 1 drivers course. Maybe someone will hire me for a straight truck or dump truck if not OTR....:biggrin_25524:

Will anyone out here SPEAK UP!!!! I know the transportation industry has been hard hit by the economy and fuel costs.....

This is not the best time of year to start training, jobs are even slower in the winter.

Use the search feature on here to get information about that school.

Make sure this is what you want to do, the failure rate is above 80% !!

    Good Luck..........

well i wAnt to do it . it was not my first choice but that has changed. I am just trying to be careful in schools I went to a bad one once by the before i knew i had a 3000 dollar loan (back in 81 that was alot for me) then again lot for me now. I have an accounting degree that have never been able to use. I do not want a cdl that i cannot use. my goal was always to train during winter. even though it is slow time i will be trained and ready by time it is busy. My last job i made 50000 a year I will be 48 by the time i start training. I am looking for 30 to 35k and will go from there. always wanted to travel all i have to hold me here is my house. my son is 24 and will be moving out and my brother will stay there. Since i have been unemployed only job offer i had was a customer service job paying $9 an hour for that i had to drive 60 miles a day and pay my mortgage. no way i could afford that.
As long as i am able to drive safely i want to drive.
By the way i called crete and they say they will hire from great lakes

    my choices are
    crete
    roehl
    trans am
    werner

i hope to get onto crete but will be happy with anything accept cr england.

They sent me an application for Valley Transportation for a possible prehire before schooling if I want to do it. They claim their placement rate is 78%. It appears that these instructors used to work for Hamrick Driving school but, they left there due to business disagreements.

My schooling at GLTDS is going to cost me $5250! I'm taking the Premier Driver Development Program / Option 1. It is ...

    125 Hrs classroom instruction
40 Hrs straight truck / passenger bus
    20 Hrs Dump truck
255 Hrs Tractor Trailor Class A
160 Hrs Externship with a national carrier

This doesn't appear to be a "CDL Mill" when I compare Hrs of training with other schools. It is 600 Hrs of training. I know I won't be a Pro after the school yet but, it seems like a good start. It's comparable to the Hamrick 600Hrs Master Driving Course but, it's about 5k cheaper. I visited the school and ALL the 6 rigs were working. They teach 9, 10, and 13 speed trannies.... not just auto and 10's...(I hope I got that right. LOL)

80% failure rate...eh...I can do this. It's just a big leap from doing 20Yrs as an electronics tech sitting behind a bench to sitting behind the wheel. I'll be 43 when I start so I'm not a kid either.

OK ...kick me around old timers!!!:biggrin_25514:

if i am able to get grant then i will do the same. I am thinking a little better after i talked to crete.
if it turns out that i will have to pay then it will either be the ptdi scool on ohio border or reohl. I would rather train with stick then automatic. which i probably would train with reohl. they are cheapest though. with a room to stay their training is 3400.
    again i am trying to get grant but may not get it because so late in year. i was told it takes 5 or 6 weeks and training has to be completed by end of year. Not sure why that matters if i start during year(but i do not write the rules}

sorry to chime in so late.
I went to Great Lakes Truck Driving in May of this year through the WIA program as I was laid off.
I up-graded from a Class B to a Class A even took the heavy equipment course.
Ater graduating you are on your own to look for companies but they do give you heads up about hiring companies. it only took me about one month to find a job
Great Lakes is owned by Hammerick same family in laws
