You might have any idea how someone drives from the outside. But get in the cab with them. That's when the bullet hits the bone. Had an old time pipeliner say to me. Most drivers herd a truck. But you manuver it.

The first truck I ever drove, a 65 Pete with a 5X3 was a challenge for me to shift. The clutch brake was weak but it was there. You had to shift the brownie real square or it would hang up.
I got impatient once in the yard and jammed the main box into gear. Big CRUNCH. The boss was walking by, looked at me and said "every time you do that you cost me money". I never forgot that.
We still have some trucks with 6x4 boxes. The drivers love them and don't want anything else.
These guys that complain about having trouble shifting a ten or thriteen speed don't know how good they have it.

Erm, you did touch on one of my flaws. Present me with a fuller 10 speed where you have to come off 5th low into 6th high across the box. Does that make sense? Then coming back down from 6th H to 5th L. back across the box.

If that transmission is not tight and has many miles on it, Im going to scratch.

My favorite was the 15 speed double under as well as the rockwell short throw 9. I call it the short throw but it's a MASSIVE transmission that can do everything. Especially top end.

When I was in school I never heard so much gear grinding in my life. Yes I did my share of it. It was amazing the gears had any teeth left lol
