Tell me. . . . How do you ground an antenna?
And, is it really important?
(Of course, I assume that when people are talking about 'grounding' or 'make sure you have a good ground,' they are talking about the antenna, right? Because what else would you ground?)
I have used magnetic mount antennas with good success for a long time. I have never had them grounded. I don't know if they ground themselves when you stick them on a painted surface, but I usually would put something underneath to protect the paint anyway, so they were never actually touching the car.
The main reason that I ask is that I use a through the glass (cell look-alike) antenna on a Jeep that I take through the woods. I had a bumper mounted whip, but it would catch on everything, and ended up breaking in about a month. I know that the through-the-glass setup isn't the greatest, but it works good for what I need it for, communicating to other trucks in our group, usually short range.
My question is, am I able to ground this type of antenna? How would I go about doing that? And, would it increase my performance at all? Would it help to lower my SWR? With an external meter, my SWR is slightly above 2:1, that was as low as I could get it.
Sorry for the long post, and thank you if you can help me!!!
Grounding the antenna? Questions. . .

No you cant ground those TTG antenna's
Everything about them(except the price) is "cheap"
I would go back to the radio its self and run direct power wires to the battery, then rear mount a long stem Wilson 2K.
Mine is bolted to the chassis just above the hinge on my
swing out tire rack,I have a ground strap running from the mount to the frame.
The stinger takes a good beating like the rest of the Jeep
but 1.3 swr has been dead on for several years. -
When I worked in the land mobile business, we tried the on glass ant.'s. Our kits came with a metal strap that You could tape or screw onto metal that was located close by. Had a little clip that went over the conn. to the radio. Seemed to work ok. Can't tell you about the CB side tho.

Everyone says that the TTG antennas are completely junk. And although my SWR is relitively high (2-2.5) it still gets me out a mile or so, in the woods here in hilly PA.
So I'm pretty pleased with the performance. -
on an antenna installation/setup the 'ground' is HALF the antenna, if you don't have one, besides your SWR pegging your meter you'll be very lucky to get out 20 feet.
magnet mounts are grounded to the car body through the magnet base, it's connected through a metal plate on the mag mount base and the body of the car making a capacitor.
I tried using a glass mount CB antenna and I could never get the #### thing to work. make sure you mount it away from defroster wires and coatings on your window, these also contain metal.. Mount it on the front or on a side window if you have to.
in my expereience.. TTG antenna work good on higher frequcenys. but they're trash on anything longer than 4 meters. CB's are in the 11 meter band..
