I am headed to Swift orientation in PA on the 24th. I am curious if any of you vets out there might have any guidance as to filling out the W4 for deductions that will lower taxes taken out but not drop it to "not enough taken out" status.
I am married with one child. I am the primary breadwinner. I claim my child as a dependent. My wife claims only herself.
I dont think I have any other pertinent details to offer. My job I am leaving could not get my local taxes done properly and messed up the tax rate so I owe local taxes this year for the first time. Then again, they also submitted my federal deductions code as 00 instead of 06.
Anyhow, thank you in advance to anyone who replies.
Guidance on filling out that W4 as a new hire.

It will all depend on your income. You can file as head of household. The more deductions taken, the less taxes.
You can always change this during the tax year.
You could have looked on your paystubs during the course of the year and it should have been noted your Federal and State deductions that were claimed. -
I always claim 1 less deduction and get that money back at the end of the year. In your case 2 deductions claim 1, also some states do not take enough out so I usually add $20 to offset that. You can always change anytime during the year. You will be better able to judge next year after you do your taxes.

its best to claim 0 and let them hold max out of your check, But if you claim any dependents you tax at the end of the year wont be as good. I know some people prefer taking as many dependents so they can have their money through the year. I prefer to have a smaller tax bill then one I have to payout more money

most of the year I claimed 2 then towards the end 3 and when I did my taxes I was head of household with a wife and 2 kids and got a nice return out of it. Not to damper on the situation but first year with Swift you might bring in $30k so I wouldnt worry too much about having more taken out. Not saying you will only make that much but its likely unless you do well out the gate and maybe get a dedicated eventually, your starting at a slower time of the year but it should start picking up soon.

Thanks to all for the replies. Much appreciated.
Kind of funny tho that some folks think only making 30k is so little. My current job I work 40-50 hours a week with OT driving a straight truck CDL Hazmat. I pull in 22k before taxes
So the starting rate driving OTR is already an increase. -

well my return was $7024, ex wife took $1900 of it though
it will probably be my last huge one since im making a lot more money now. My return is sitting in the bank waiting on getting into a bigger house and new furniture. -
why head of household when you can file married?
