Have been using the Gulf Coast filter for around 3 years on my previous truck and tried using the OPS-1 system on my new truck. Wanted to see if it would do as good of a job without having the mess and the weight of the Gulf Coast Filter.
Tried it for 60,000 miles and switched back to the Gulf Coast Filter. If you do this, don't make the mistake of telling Jerry Sims (Owner of Gulf Coast Filter) that you did this. I contacted him via e-mail after having the GCF on for about 70,000 miles because I felt it was not filtering as good on the new truck as it had on the old one. At first he brushed me off and told me to call OPS-1 and ask their experts. When I didn't do away he followed up by giving me a page long verbal lashing for trying a different product and not just believing all the hype that GCF puts out. This was after I told him I had switched back to his filter because I thought it worked better.
I will not be buying anymore filter elements from Gulf Coast Filters. You can do your own research, but here is what I've found.
When GCF 1st starting producing their filters, it had a paper towel element. I guess they soon figured out that it was a one time sale and needed a way to keep customers buying from them and they started selling the "Filter Element" # a cost of $15 to $17 a piece with shipping costs. Tear this element apart and you will find a roll of paper towel. It is wrapped in a terry clothe material to conceil the roll of towel and has a fancy plastic end to it (Just started adding that a year or two ago), but it is a roll of Bounty paper towel. I compared the GCF with a roll of Bounty I had in my truck and it is Identical! right down to the patern of the bumps on the paper. At a cost savings of around $30 dollars every 10,000 miles this filter could turn out to save a truck owner close to the 70% that they claim on GFC's web site.
Not sure how GFC figures it saves 70% on an oil change, you do the math. Can get oil change with no grease job at Speedco for $199. If you change your oil # 20,000 miles (within spec's for most engines) you will have changed four GFC elements # a cost of $66 and added 6 gallons of oil # $8 per, there's another $48 dollars. You still have to change the fuel filters and on my cummins that's another $30. The main oil filter still needs to be changed every 40,000 miles that adds another $10 per 10,000. You are now up to $166 dollars for 20,000 miles. Oh and don't forget the $19.95 oil sample every 10,000 miles. You are now at $205.90 for 20,000 miles using the Gulf Coast Filter system buying their elements and using their oil analysis program. (The free service that they provide to read your oil analysis actually costs you about $5 per. You can use the oil testing program that CAT or Cummins provides for $15 per sample. I would think that if the engine Manufacturer trusts the results, you can too.)

Next why are you adding the price of fuel filters when you are talking about GCF?
Dont think you let any top secret info out about the paper towels either. That little fact has been well know for years. But I dont think I would wanna run out and buy a bunch of paper towels from Wal-Mart and shove them in my GCF WITHOUT the terry clothe wraper either.
Now about that mess your making changing there filters. The only thing I can think of asking is why? When I change mine I dont make a mess. I open the drain up, take a simple, grease the truck and trailer and come back to change the filter. Pull the first one out put it in a bucket thro it away and get the second one out and do the same, Not one drop of oil gets on my wifes blacktop drive way. I make a mess changing the spin on filter.
Now back to your fuzzy math. I buy a case of filters from GCF for $173.00 and that will do 3 filter changes The 173 includes 3 oil simples and shipping.
One filter change with oil simple is $57.66 add 2 1/2 gallons of oil # $28.75 for a total of $86.41 per filter change.
This truck has 305900 miles on it with only one oil change and that was the break in oil.
Using your $199 Speedco no grease job, no fuel filters and no spin on oil filter price lets see what I saved.
10000 mile filter change with 300000 mile is 30 changes
30x $86.41=$2592.30
30x$199= $5970.00
for a savings of $3377.70 and that savings right there almost paid for this new set of drive tires.
From your post it looks more like your just trying to do a hack job on GCF to me. -
I don't know what's so hard about the math. I wonder how you clean your fuel filters with changing the Gulf Coast Filter. You still have to change the fuel filters and the full flow oil filter on a regular basis. And for $199 dollars at speedco, you get the fuel and oil filter changed, just no grease job, and that is why I used that number. I don't think you get a grease job or fuel and oil filter with the $173 GCF package.
As far as the Cheese Cloth material surrounding the paper towel, could be there to keep everyone from seeing the roll of paper towel underneath. Kind of hard to charge someone $15 dollars for a roll of paper towel if they know that's what there're getting, but wait, if we cover it up and tell everyone it's a filter element, now it's a better product and we can keep everyone buying from us.
I am not saying this filter does not work, I went back to using it after trying an OPS-1 system, but yes I am on a mission to inform as many people as possible to the alternatives to buying any more filter elements from GCF. If this were truly a superior filter and not just Bounty paper towel, I could see spending the extra money. Tear one apart for yourself, the quilting of the paper towel is the same as on a roll of Bounty. -
Forgot too, your math on the oil change price at Speedco assumes that you would be changing your oil at 10,000 miles, not 20,000. Your number would be cut in half which would be $2,985 and you still need to purchase 10 fuel filters. Even if the GCF is working great will have to change the full flow oil filter at least every 50,000 miles so you have 6 of those.
Fuel filters (2) for my Cummins runs me $30 X 10= 300
Oil filter $40 X 6 = 240
Oil changes at speedco $199 X 15 = $2,985
GCF 30 X $86.41 = $2,592.3
Plus oil and fuel filters $ 540.00
Total of $3,132.30 for a net loss of $147.30
I believe this filter system works, just don't believe that you need to buy their $16 filter elements or subscribe to the $20 oil sample program to get the same results. Their free reading of the oil sample actually costs you about $5. I quit using it, not because the results were bad, just that it would take almost two weeks to get the results and I sometimes would run almost 8,000 miles. What's the point of sampling every 10,000 miles if you run almost that before you know if you have a problem??Last edited: Apr 22, 2009

I recently had a full PM done at the Petro in Ashland VA and the topic of the GCF system came up. The service manager told me that they will not touch a GCF setup because of liability issues with using a roll of paper towels for a filter.

Cat has a 5 micron oil filter for the 3400 & "C" series engines "1808". This will do more than the aftermarket "snake oil" roll of paper towels, roll of outhouse paper, wanna be filters & not clog up the Jake Brake Ports with loose fibers!!!!!!!!! I have been able to run my oil for 40,000 miles with a filter change # 20,000 & the samples come back fron Holt Cat as the oil being still "serviceable". I did stretch this to 55,000 in this economic "bonanza" we are experiencing & just might have cost me a camshaft. Not sure as the jury is atill out on that one. Just my 2 cents worth.

Your numbers are still fuzzy. For one thing I dont change my fuel filters every 10000 miles, I may go as long as 30000 before thay are changed. As for the lube jobs I do them myself, not vary often do I get them done on the road for the simple fact when I do it I know its been done and it gives me a chance to look around under the truck and trailor.
Like I said before its not a top secret as to what the filter is made of. It works and to me thats all that matters. I have not the time nor the desire to try and make or inprove the filters just to save money, the GCF is already doing that. Back in the 70"s someone came out with a filter system for cars and lite trucks that used toilet paper, while it did work til the paper started coming apart and going thru engines.
If you didnt know paper media of some sort is in all filters. Again its been know for sometime what GCF are made of.
If you dont like thers oil simple program you dont have to take it. I have no idea what your talking about a free reading on the oil simple, its 19.95 plain and simple. As to you getting your analysis back two weeks later that part is true, but Jerry has it about a week before you get it. Say it takes 2 to 3 days for it to get to Denver another day to read it and GCF downloads the analysis reports every day, they go over them, print them out and mail them out. I also question the some what slow return and this was told to me, also if the simple in question is way out of line the lab calls GCF.
Also at any point that if I want a copy of my simples from day one GCF has them on file.
Your question GCF saving up to 70% on oil changes but OPS claims 80% savings, why are you not questioning that?
I would like to read your and jerry's email to each other.....I still say there is more to this than what is being told.

Think I'll check my drain plug on my oil pan and see if it will come loose. -
Do that. Check your drain plug. Mine had the "normal dusting" of metal, seems that the 5 micron caught the shaled "parts". For a fact, oil does not wear out.. The additives depleate after time & the contaminantes<SP> built up. In these economic times ANY help that is shared between us is more than a little appreciated!!!!!

True oil dosent wear out, just gets dirty, and no spin on oil filter is going to get fuel soot out. One of the reasons why I went with GCF is when you change the filter you put back 2 1/2 gallons oil to reup the additives in the oil.
