according to article and an eye witness on the net, there was a NC State Trooper with the truck and the truck had been trying to make the turn for about 15 mins,,the problem was the truck and combination trailer was too long to make the turn,, from the pictures I saw on the net it looks like the combination was a 3+3+3+3 13 axle set up,,crossing was flat so the rig most likely did not get hung up on the tracks,,
In the past with stretch loads I have had state mandated routing where I could not make the turns on the route,,Once in Kansas I had to get local cops to help me make turns in a town on the route,,

Methinks someone's rear end, besides the truckers, will be in a sling.

No matter what, states issue permits for routes with caveats that put all the responsibility back on the driver and trucking company. I'm thinking of the collapse of the I-5 bridge in Skagit, Washington, with that high load getting routed under a low bridge, and now getting sued by the state.tsavory Thanks this. -
The article said the driver was ok.
Shaggy Thanks this. -
You'd think someone would have scouted the route beforehand, and would have known that turn might be a problem, and a little googling would have told them that a fast Amtrak train would be coming through ... as it does EVERY day at that same time. Good grief some of those heavy hauler outfits, to be paid as much as they are, still demonstrate a lot of incompetence in too many cases.
