Guy M Turner heavy haul hit by Amtrak in NE North Carolina

according to article and an eye witness on the net, there was a NC State Trooper with the truck and the truck had been trying to make the turn for about 15 mins,,the problem was the truck and combination trailer was too long to make the turn,, from the pictures I saw on the net it looks like the combination was a 3+3+3+3 13 axle set up,,crossing was flat so the rig most likely did not get hung up on the tracks,,

In the past with stretch loads I have had state mandated routing where I could not make the turns on the route,,Once in Kansas I had to get local cops to help me make turns in a town on the route,,

i wanna know WHY they didnt realize they couldnt make the turn?? beforehand .... isnt that supposed to be all mapped out in advance ???

From the audio I think the people shooting the video where having sex, so for shooting a video of a train crashing into a truck while having sex in a moving car, it was pretty good IMHO.

 

I thought that too..... It sounded like it may have been perfect timing. Lol.

 

With the NC Patrol escort it seems there should have been immediate communication with Amtrak to let them know the crossing wasn't clear, once the difficulty of the turn was evident. If not, then there SHOULD be review of procedure for making sure lines of communication are open with train companies.

No matter what, states issue permits for routes with caveats that put all the responsibility back on the driver and trucking company. I'm thinking of the collapse of the I-5 bridge in Skagit, Washington, with that high load getting routed under a low bridge, and now getting sued by the state.

 

The article said the driver was ok.

 

You'd think someone would have scouted the route beforehand, and would have known that turn might be a problem, and a little googling would have told them that a fast Amtrak train would be coming through ... as it does EVERY day at that same time. Good grief some of those heavy hauler outfits, to be paid as much as they are, still demonstrate a lot of incompetence in too many cases.
