Hr Block is usually not up to date on all the nuances of truck driver returns. They specialize in basic returns that they can knock out in 30 minutes to an hour and take standard deductions rather than getting into whats an itemizable deduction and what isnt.

That said you should really spend the money for a competent cpa to help guide you especially if you are an owner op.

I listen to Sirius Satellite radio every day and hear a fella by the name of John Turner each week. He is a cpa based out of Tx that specializes in truck driver tax returns. He seems to be extremely knowledgeable and offers answers each week to truck drivers who call in to the Loading Dock (a trucker oriented radio show) asking about specific deductions such as per diems, what is and what isnt deductible, and little known programs such as the hope credit and lifetime learning credit as well as how to deduct apu's and the fuel used to run them. He will also offer to look at your last 3 years of tax returns and offer to amend them to get you more money back (in the event you missed some legitimate deductions and have the receipts to back them up).

If you do an internet search for John E. Turner cpa Houston Tx you should come up with his website and contact info.

I use a private tax professional accountant that is familiar with a truckers needs and deductions that we all have and need to use to survive in this industry.I would look for a good trucker friendly profesional accountant that is a local,so you can talk face to face.If there is a problem,he or she is right there for you.

I can chime in on this one! My wife is a tax preparer at our local H&R office. She speacializes in truckers and farmers and does alot of taxes for just these industries. H&R does offer classes to their employees specifically for doing trucker taxes. They also try to keep at least one person in each office that has taken the class. Out of all of the returns that my wife files, she enjoys doing the truckers returns the most because she likes knowing that she helped a trucker and can save them alot of money.

Get a tax professional that is an enrolled agent or a CPA . They can represent you during an audit or in tax court . If you used H&R Block or others like them you are on your own . The time to consult with a tax professional is at the beginning of the tax year , not the end of it . They can save you a lot during the year .

I found a lady in Virginia that specializes in truck driver returns. You can google her at RKMS tax Service. She seems very knowledgeable and she lives around Mt Jackson Va off of I81 so she should be familiar with Virginia state taxes as well.

Ah, yeah ... no offense to the 1% of H&R reps that know what they're doing, but look for a professional that knows trucking.
