My truck is a 10 speed, and it is governed at 73mph. I developed a system with the gear shifter to ensure i never speed or at most only go 3-4mph over the limit. For example large areas of the nation as you all know have speed limits of 70, 75, and 80mph. So in those cases i floor it on 10th gear at 73mph. The fastest it goes in 9th gear is 66 mph. So when it is 65mph i floor it on 9th and forget about it. 9th gear is the only one that requires some focus because 8th gear only goes 48. So with speed limits of 55 or 60 i either put it in cruise or if the conditions arent safe or practical for that i just pay attention. 6th gear is 25 so that works great in school zones and other areas. 7th gear is 35 which is useful on many roads in small towns and such.

Anyways, are there any quirky habits or methods of doing things that you have incorporated into your driving to ensure safe driving and/or the preservation of your CDL?

So you run the piss out of the engine because you can not maintain your speed? You might want to find another way so your engine will live longer. The object is to get to you speed with the lowest RPM's. Doesn't your company have a fuel program?

I just drive like I've got some sense and respect the truck and always stay ahead of it and the situation around me at all times so I'm not reacting to things that happen but rather anticipating and ready for them. 8 times out of 10 if someone is going to do something stupid around you you can tell before they do said stupid act. Be ready. The unexpected out of the blue thing that happens that you have no choice but react evasively to happens but is rare.

The things like speed management and not tearing things up are the easiest of all that we have to deal with out here with regard to 'protecting the license'

No accidents, incidents, tickets or violations and 0 csa points in 39 months now bears out this is a good strategy that works.

Any suggestions? Not cruise control because I don't like it. When I press on the brake the cruise doesn't automatically disable and picks back up the speed once i let go of the brakes. That is dangerous IMO. It isn't until I reach over and switch of the cruise that it disables.

I also try to keep the rpm's as high as humanly possible because i am too simple minded to keep control of my truck alone. i always say let the truck control me.

On a more serious note maintaining a safe speed is about the easiest thing i do all day and i think this is one of the dumbest posts i have seen on here in a while, especially considering it mentioned safety in the title.

I have been able to predict what 4-wheelers are going to do before they do it pretty accurately as well. Too many instances someone speeds up next to me, gets in front of me and then slows down. It is almost as if they are fishing for a lawsuit.....

So what I do if it's an open road with little to no traffic when a 4-wheeler gets in front of me I get over into the next lane for a few seconds to see how fast they go then if they continue on going fast I get over or if they start slowing down I just pass them up.

So when you gonna buy your own truck so ya can make them big bucks? Find a company that will let you run whatever speed you want and then you can really rack up them miles!

buy your own fuel then see how you feel about running low gear high speed high rpm....

this post is written by a guy who admitted only owner ops will hire him because of his shoddy record... 0-1 years experience and already blacklisted, nuff said

I am not blacklisted. 99% of all companies told me after 6mo-1yr they will hire me. Everything comes off of my record January 1st.
