Had my radio tweaked, peaked, and tuned. Now it's noisy!

Here's the deal. I bought a Galaxy DX979 over the Summer this year. Worked pretty good. I decided to do the peak, tune, and alignment. Sounds and listens fairly well. Also had an echo board put in.

A couple of months go by and I notice I'm not really getting responses on the radio. I take it to another guy and he says my peak is 1 watt. He tested it on both wattage meters he had just to be sure. Then he opens it up and finds out that the first guy put a damaged connex board in, which is why my echo make a clicking noise whenever I turned the knob to choose my delay volume. Plus it the turbo echo was disabled manually. I didn't care about that, since I just wanted a tad of echo.

So this guy in PA fixes my radio and all seems good. I go to sleep and start rolling the next day. Turns out my radio sounds and listens GREAT, until I start the engine. I get alternator whine like crazy, unless I crank my squelch all the way up to cancel it, but then I can't listen to anything!

I opened it up and can't seem to SEE any issues. Then again, I don't know electronics and don't know if there's a cold solder joint or what.

I also don't know a lot about radios. I just like to listen and occasionally say something, but when I key up, other drivers say my radio sounds like nails on a chalkboard.

Does this simply mean I need to wire straight to my battery? Or do I need to seek out professional help for a ground problem inside the radio?

Any serious thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I just don't want to jump to conclusions without some good input first. All I know right now is that I don't want to pay for the third time for a fix that should have worked the first time.

How's your antenna mounted or is it the truck antenna and coax? I had that probably with a ground wire for the antenna so discounted it and worked fine. Also that make things to stop noises like that to connect to the power wires.

Right now I'm running through stock coax, dual antennae. 4' firestik tunable tips.

I have also run with my own coax with a single 4' firestik with no issues. This noise issue started right after I had my radio "tweaked, peaked, tuned, and echo" put in.

I got the noise in my Peterbilt and now I'm still getting it in an International Durastar. I even get it in my personal vehicle.

This is why I'm assuming the last guy botched the job, but I can't take it to him, because I never go out to where he is and I don't feel like shipping or trying again.

It's just aggravating. I spent 120 bucks on the radio. I spent 80 bucks in July getting my first tweak and peak with that broken connex board put in. I didn't know better, though.

Then I spent another 80 bucks on the other guy in PA and everything was noticeably better until I left the next morning. I didn't think to start my engine and check my radio while it was running. Just didn't occur to me.

I've put my radio in three vehicles, all with different antenna and power wirings and the results are the same. NOISE.

My guess is a lose ground in the radio...try running a desperate antenna and coax. I live in Amarillo, Tx if you ever make it this thrre is a old lady that is awesome at working on radio down here. She added echo, and tuned my last radio and did a great job.

I'm getting the same result in multiple vehicles with multiple antenna setups. Definitely the radio. I have a Cobra 29 that doesn't do that and the radio in my work truck is quiet, too. I'll get this solved somehow.

Hoping to find a tech I can trust in Pittsburgh

Maybe the Tech in PA turned up the receive on the radio so it would hear better and now engine noise is showing up.
A inexpensive 12 volt noise filter on the power wire should solve it.
Does it get a little better with the ANL on?

Was this Bob's CB in PA? He usually does great work.

Look carefully at the foil side for a solder jumper between the board DC ground and chassis ground. Unsolder it to isolate the two ground systems, removing the ground loop. Virtually a 100 percent likelihood the shop added this putting the radio in the vehicle's electrical system return path.

Just curious, when you say your squelch is "cranked all the way up", do you mean like closed completely? Or in the noon-2 position?
