In 91 I took a full time temp gig w UPS.
    Feeder driver.
Did a good job and at the end of the year they kept me and another guy on as permanent full time. Went to bottom of list and started a 4 year progression to scale.
Did another 6 months and found another union job paying the same w another 4 yr to scale.
In 91 pay was 18+ per hour.
Always have wondered where I'd be if I would have stuck it out but I've realized that I never enjoyed freight hauls over the same route every day.
You will lose some of the freedoms most drivers take for granted, and that alot of us picked the career for.
    Good luck.

Wow it was 4 years in 91? That's what it's back up to now. It was 18 months in 01 when I started driving.

If you can't live on $60K - $65K for 25-32 weeks work, then also hire on with a temp service for more hours each week. Just keep it a secret though. I've known many drivers that did or still do that. Neither company they work for knows about the other.

if you have to work inside, then do so. this can shorten your time going full time.

    good luck to you.

The thing I would hate about working for UPS would be being obligated to snail race anybody doing 0.1 MPH slower than you to stay on schedule.

Be aware the company isn't a one size fits all scenario. Review the contract and supplement if you know what teamster local is there.

You may not get insurance until you have earned ft permanent status after probation. Im pretty sure they wont flip flop pay rates unless the local has approved it or its past practice. Learn the contract and know when the free periods are for seasonal/casual.

Not sure if 60-65k is possible in the first year as i only got a few months in. Things are slow where I'm at and I've been sitting for close to two weeks.

    Best of luck.

Bet you're not planning on leaving though!
Maybe his terminal in New York is busier than the one where you are.

ultimately here is my situation. my 70 year old mother has been watching my kids until i get home from work. my wife works at a local hospital doing admissions. she carries the health insurance which what she gets is good insurance at a reasonable price. the insurance my employer offers for family plan is really terrible. its on the order of $8-900 a month and doesn't cover much. my wife has COPD, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes. my mother's knee is getting pretty bad, and she can barely walk/drive. realistically i dont have much longer she can watch my kids. we have had numerous babysitter issues, they all quit on us after awhile. im starting to know how my boss feels loosing drivers LOL. my oldest son goes after school activities that costs $230 a month. my youngest son would have to go to a daycare center at a cost of $36 per day, that's $180 per week and $800 a month. so the total childcare cost would exceed $1k per month if we both continued to work.

i was looking for a full time job, with full time health care benefits. i have a wife that has health problems and the potential of outrageous child care costs. i was looking for a job that would allow my wife to stay home with our kids. my wife doesn't make much money but her health is not the greatest. we need fully or nearly fully funded health ins.

unfortunately at least temporarily it is becoming impractical for us both to work, unfortunately in our current situation it is impossible for us both not to work. i make the majority of the money she gets the benefits.

that is what i was hoping for with UPS. it might provide that down the road but right now it wont. going without benefits for any length of time is scary.

    ozempic $2,700 every 3 months
    breo $350 a month
