hey everyone, I just bought a 2006 western star 4900 sa. Didn't think much of it at first but now that I've been driving it a few days, seems too much of a coincidence. My pyro, tran temp, fuel gauge and all 3 diff temp sensors don't work. I quickly checked and the pigtails going to the diffs and pyro sensor seem good. I thought I would ask on here, maybe there's a common between these?
Thanks in advance! And yes 3 diffs, it's a tri drive.
Half my gauges aren't working 06 star

There is a little box on the drivers side lower firewall that controls some of that stuff, mine did a very similar thing it ended up being a shorted wire.dustinbrock Thanks this.

Are the gauges plugged in?
Not sure what is and what isn't multiplexed on these trucks but I would suspect those temperature gauges probably aren't. Maybe a common ground in the dash or a common power supply to all those gauges? -
Was it a company truck?sometimes they take off the communication hardware(qualcom or whatever they used)and leave behind exposed wires that get corroded and cause all kind of problems.

I have thought of buying a used rig and trailer through auctions and to become an O/O but am a little nervous about electrical or even mechanical issues. I hope you get this fixed as inexpensively as possible and would love to hear how it goes.

I'm not sure either. I know in 2014 when I looked at a Brand new star, one of th selling features was that all gauges had the same plugs so I could organize my cluster exactly how I wanted it by just swapping the fishes, the data link could detect which huge was plugged in. I'm not sure if a 06 has that going on or not though.....

Mines an 05 and they're multiplexed, I lost about the same gauges ashes describing and a google search mentioned those same gauges and that little black box I was talking about. I thought yeah that's it so I grabbed the one off a wrecked truck we had and nothing. Ended up taking it to Freightliner and the found the short. Interesting thing about the gauges, we have 9 Western Stars 2 tractors and 7 dumps. The older ones are all electronic gauges, the two newer ones are multiplex gauges bit the air gauges actually have airlines running to them.dustinbrock and AModelCat Thank this.

I wasn't 100% sure on that. Last fleet I worked for had a ton of 2006's but we never had any gauge troubles. Honestly don't even remember opening the dash on any of them.
dustinbrock Thanks this. -
Ok I'll start by looking for the box mentioned.

The thing with multiplexing is that everything is attached with a pair of wires. A wire breaks somewhere and you lose everything. In theory its impressive but in reality it kind of sucks. I'm willing to bet all the gauges you mentioned are all interconnected from that box @johndeere4020 mentioned.
