I'm not sure what antenna you are referring to, but that's not the ATAS. I have an ATAS-100 connected to my FT-100, and the only thing connecting the two is the antenna coax.
If I switch bands and key the mic, the antenna does not automatically retune. I need to scroll to the antenna menu, and hit the Tune button. Then, the radio will control the antenna and tune it.
I won't say that the ATAS is the best antenna out there, because it's not. However, I have also used worse antennas while mobile. When I bought it (shortly after it came out), the alternatives were Hustlers, Hamsticks, and a few huge screwdrivers that looked like they were made in someone's garage over the weekend.
