On same type of road myself. Almost done, but ive watched guys retire and come back because of not being fulfilledwith what their new phase of life is. I ve gotten "out of the truck" for short periods and had the feeling of needing to go somewhere when i dont. I got into trucking just to be going places and i still love that..... and need it.
So my big challenge ( & prolly yours) is whats next ? I cant just sit somewhere and after years of living in the space of a walk in closet, i dont like living in a house
Hanging it up after 42 years trucking

This post is a Great one! Marmonman, thank you so much for all the years being out there. I don’t know if there’s any other industry other than trucking , the way we feel , we put our hearts and souls driving these trucks our whole life. Trying to deliver freight and keep the road safe at the same time .it’s been very difficult the last 10-15 years on the roads. I drove my whole life in Chicago now I’m running 500 miles a night. I am not good at this. I drink a lot of water and coffee you can’t do that driving a truck over the road long distance, I’m gonna have to worry about wearing a darn diaper ha ha ha

Yeah, congrats Marmonman, from one old geezer to another. I retired in '08, age 62. Great health, nothing to do, bought a computer, attended class to learn about it, been having fun ever since. Living in Kingman, Az. at the time with 5 truck stops, so I could stop by for a coffee and smell the old diesel fumes ! My timing was good (pre ELD days)
I suggest to keep the old girl for awhile, assuming you have a place to park it. Just climbing on board occasionally to collect your thoughts and staring thru the windshield. Memory lane, as they say. Sounds like you/me the same driving philosophy.....get your dispatch, pick and deliver the load, deal with whatever comes your way. Don't cry if you run east coast or NYC, right ?
Enjoy your retirement years ! -
Well hell, who else read marmonman's post and found themselves stifling their Adams apple back down?
Fourty-two years, that's old-skool how-to right there!
I have no clue of your plans nor finances, but, well hell mister, that rig!! ...... do you HAVE to sell it?
Reckon I'm one of those somewhat eccentric folk, Id let it rot to nuttin' in the back lot with me, haha.Wargames, marmonman, bzinger and 1 other person Thank this. -

Congratulations, Mormonman. I was also an 0-0 with 43 years OTR. I retired last year, and at first it is great, but hang on to that old girl to make sure because sitting home gets really boring after a while. I was offered a company driving position with the company. I was leased to, but I’m not sure if I wanna go back on the road with all the new modern day steering wheel holding orangutans. Things sure did change since 1979. good luck with your future. Job well done

Thanks everyone!
I have plenty to keep me busy for at least 10 years LOL!
I am learning how to not be a nomad after a lifetime of being a traveling man.
There should be a class to teach you how to be "normal" lol.
I like the not filling out a logbook after having logged every day of my life for 42 years.
That is an easy thing to get into.
One thing that struck me as weird is not needing to keep a shaving bag ready to go.
Now all my clothes go into my dresser instead of my bag sitting ready to head out lol.
I will keep the old truck around until the boss lady says it's time to let it go or I am adjusted to the whole new life style.
Maybe I need to give it to the truck museum in Walcott Iowa that would be a hoot to see it in a museum!
Well that's enough blithering on from me for the daytime to go be normal for the day.
