Hardest part of finding a job?

The hardest part?

Realizing that the internet isn't the "be all and end all" for job hunting. After putting in some applications on line and being accepted with some of the better "training" companies like Gordon and Watkins & Shepard (even though I didn't really want to be OTR), because that seems to be the standard way of doing things, I went out into the world and actually applied in person with some local companies.

I landed a local bulk hauling (powder) job. This would never have happened if I hadn't decided to go "old school" with my job hunt because the company that hired me has the "normal" 2 years recent driving experience .... yada yada...(I haven't driven class A for over 10 years) plus they don't even have a web site.

Timing is everything. Step away from the computer ......

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm just trying to wrap my head around the reason why so many guys say they can't find jobs. Especially when it comes to using the internet as a means to find them. Are these web sites not doing a good job? Where's the break down happening? A friend of mine tells me that companies can't find drivers. Any ideas?

 

I myself have no idea why people can't find jobs. I consider myself blessed. I am almost 50 and left home when I was 16. Since then I have always been employed full time. I have never been laid off or fired. I am always getting job offers. Even when I am not applying or looking for work.

 

That's what I've been saying how long now??? It's great you went that way because even if you hadn't have found a job at least you know you tried it all.

 

yes sir ..... credit where credit is due. It was mostly your posts that led to my conclusion that the "pre-internet" way of finding a job was to go door to door and, the pre "CDL mill" way of getting a driving job was to keep pestering 'em until they gave you a job or had you arrested for trespassing! So if it worked then it'll prolly work now.


To the OP - the "breakdown" is that some of the best companies to work for are small and don't have websites. We seem to have a pre-conceived notion that no company will hire a trainee due to insurance etc...... you never know until you look. Also I think that because of the current economy, we tend to automatically think that small companies are hurting and not hiring. Not always true. So maybe some smaller companies are getting lost in the shuffle?

The hardest part for me was giving up the crappy job that I was miserable at anyway. I had to get fired before I finally HAD to quit making excuses as to why I "couldn't" find a job.
I'm so much happier now. I wish they would have fired me sooner!
