Ok Guys here's what it is. My guy got there on time/early for 3.30 pick up appt. 4 trucks in front. Got to front 4.45 and was told his hard hat did not comply because it had no chin strap. But he could buy one from their facility opposite. It was his first visit so he thought, OK I learned something , no real problem. Out of the queue. Across the road to buy the necessary item. Back in the line, now 9 or 10 in front. After 4 hours plus he reached the front at 10.00 pm and was told his dunnage was not good enough, because the receiver was very particular about the loading of their steel. He had a good supply some new , some not, but in his opinion it was acceptable. Was told, guess what ? You can buy it across the street from their facility. At this point in time there were well over 20 trucks in the queue and even at an optimistic 20 mins per truck he figured re-entering would mean a minimum wait of 8 hours. He has been there 8 hours and faces further 8 hours minimum. I have 3 questions I would like your help with:
What should he do ? What would you have done ? What do you think he did actually did ?
I can tell you he is a Church going Christian. Conscientious and responsible family man. Intelligent and interesting guy. Proficient in martial arts, rock musician, helpful, amiable type who makes friends almost every where he goes. Tries hard to stay legal, is D & D free, but is concerned about the effects his job has on his health and sanity.
Has anyone had problems getting loaded at Gerdau Ameristeel, Midlothian TX

I've been to a lot of job sites that are anal about safety, but never heard of needing a chin strap.
Plus if the dunnage he has is good and they reject it. To me that sounds like a money scam all the way around. Me I would tell them to pack sand and would call the broker or office and tell them to find another trk. as I'm to old for those gamesNavigatorWife and MackDaddyMark Thank this. -
Need hardhat? Can purchase from their facility across the road?
Dunnage not proper? Can purchase all new dunnage from their facility across the road?
Scam. Plain and simple. Sounds like this place is just out to make as much money off the drivers/companies they can. Next time, don't send your driver there. There's gotta be better freight coming out of that area of Texas, with less bullcrap all around.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
Gerdau is requiring chin strap on the hardhat at many/most of their locations now. I've noticed they are tending to standardize their PPE requirements across their various sites in the past few months.

Sounds like the broker/company needs to list all the requirements that need to be met for this company so that the driver can meet them before he gets into a line. New wood each time as a warning maybe. It sounds like they need a bull pen and give out numbers then everyone can park and get what they need without being kicked to the back of the line again.
Each different division of trucking has its' own set of problems and holdups to getting the job done. The first line of defense is the one who collects the info about the load and the company that it is being shipped from, so having all the pitnicky things down will help the trucker arrive there and hopefully with no holdups. It is a 50/50 gambit, the shipper gets peeved when all these trucks show up and they are prepared for the job.
Your driver now knows what to expect, so hopefully if he gets a load from them again, it will go a lot better for him, I hope. He did good keeping his cool. If he is there with all the bells and whistles they require, then if they keep him held up it is on them, then I would have a fit for detention. But just think of all these orders being loaded and five of them are out of order because they didn't have what they needed.
