Has anyone here heard about the proposed AmeriStarRail NYC - LA Route?
AmeriStarRail is aparently proposing a rail route beginning May 2026 that would also include a provision for drivers to drive onto a flatbed and take the required 10-hour rest while still moving toward their destinations. Any thoughts on the viability and logistics regarding this idea?
HAs anyone heard about the proposed AmeriStarRail NYC - LA Route?

There's a thread on here somewhere about that.
Here it is!

Reminds me of the highly touted “Iceberg Express” back in the 99s
50 hours Central Valley California to Hunts Point..,Philly…Chelsea
Ever wonder why the entire holding area at the point is stuffed with broken rotting leased rail trailers???
Yup that xcountry train experiment did so well

They had one from SD to CA

So a company would pay to get a T/T loaded onto a railcar then also pay for the driver to ride in the passenger area. A team running that route would still be faster and cheaper that the train.
And the railroads already make their freight trains have priority over passenger (Amtrak) trains and aren't likely to change that policy.201, TheLoadOut and Deere hunter Thank this. -
I got a call from an old manager who is in that line now. Taking containers from railway. The money was tempting, but I told him I retired. He laughed and said "Well, good for you. Congratulations, but if you ever get tired of playing golf let me know"
Heck, I don't even play golf. -
This reminds me of the Lake Express across Lake Michigan. It's not cheap for a semi, but an alternative to Chicago. I can only imagine the logistic nightmares on a train. I checked out taking the train from Denver to Portland Or., IDK, maybe 15 hours by car, I was astonished to see it takes almost 68 HOURS by train!
Where does it go, New Orleans 1st? I've heard of mega delays sitting on a siding in Bugtussle, Ms. waiting on a freight train. Breakdowns are common, my son wanted to go from Portland to Seattle, by train, about 2 hours out of Portland, train broke down, and all were bussed back to Portland. You have to give some folks credit, they are trying to help ease the trucking crisis( what crisis?) but like EVs, nothing will replace good old fossil fuel for our lives today,, and nothing will replace our 2/3 day delivery to just about anywhere, that a truck can go, that is. A train, good heavens, it's not 1937 anymore,,,

Used to deliver to a drywall distributor. Always would see train cars on his sidings. One day, decided to ask what that was all about, because trucks delivering were lined up deep. Said can’t rely on the rail, and it takes a couple of months to get the cars in. He had customers to supply, needed the product now.
Speed_Drums and hope not dumb twucker Thank this. -
In theory it could be great
Drivers could get rest, if getting out of truck maybe have on board medical, dental in addition to inevitable lizards.
Maybe even truck maintenance could be done.
All great theories but probably won't happen.Speed_Drums Thanks this.
