Has anyone used WIA funding for school?

#### man, 3 weeks?!?!?! Thats FAST! It took me close to 5 months of red tape and jumping through hoops to get it here in central Cali. But hey I did get it so I guess I really can't complain.

 

Anybody thinking of using it, may want to do so soon.

Not sure how much longer it will be available.

 

The Counselor is blowing smoke up your #####. Even though its federal money the states divvy it up differently. In Pa. it isn't that easy all kinds of hoops to jump through. Our job dept. is called Career link it has its own version of monster or career builders online. You need to sign up for and use it to "prove you are looking".
Also there are links to lists of industries like trucking that the state considers to be in need of people and lists of approved schools and training facilities.
Print these out and take them back to that counselor along with...
Letter from previous employer stating layoff is permanent.
Unemployment comp statement.
Food stamp statement.
All your papers DL,Social sec. card, birth cert, mil id etc.
And a diary of all the job apps. that you have tried so far.
As many prehire letters as you can get.
List of families income.
Flop this on the counselors desk and tell them you want to sign up NOW.
You ARE a Dislocated worker!!

 

I'm supposed to meet with my local job center for the orientation for this WIA funding in May. I'm wondering now if I'm going to be wasting my time or if I should just pay for the school myself....

 

#### u have to wait till may? that is friggin crazy. that means u prob wont be going to school till june or more likely july

 

Some companies will reimburse you for training. If you could find one of these and have the funds to pay for school yourself, you'll basically loaning yourself the money. On top of that what is it going to cost you to sit around for a few months compared to working? Just my thoughts, as I really don't know your real situation. Good luck in whatever you decide.

Yep. That's when the next "orientation" will be here. And that's just to have a worker assigned to me. But since I have been able to get the money up to actually pay for the school myself(using my 401k), I'm just gonna go that route. I will be going to night classes so I can stay at my current job for now.

 

goodluck. I just got back from wia. I start jumping hoops the 28th. A full week of going to b.s classes that have nothing to do with trucking but everything with keeping the wia folks employed Prob start trucking school around 04/09/11. So excited!

 

wish it was soo easy...i still have to jump the hoops and then mid april ill be going to school YAY!
