Hi, I just got back from the local career link here in Se Pa. Where they tried their damnedest to discourage me from doing thr Wia. thing.
Said there were no cdl jobs here and that it doesn"t pay and the retention rate of the grads is not good.
The job listings in the papers and internet show otherwise compared to home building (my previous profession). And the states own website shows a retention and employment rate of 80 % after 3rd Q. she just got silent. At least at the sage school in Lehigh. Then gave me guff about not having my resume on the state job list site. So I had to put that in and I am supposed to get back to them.
Is there any new grads in here from pa that can give me any advise? It would be much appreciated.

Was going to Swift training but a friend advised to me to check out WIA.
My career advisor at WIA told me I may not be able to get paid training because they state that there is no jobs for new trucking. That in their past experience most trucking companies won't give students frieght unless they are leasing trucks. Is this a fact?

A recruiter a swift told me that there was plenty of loads for new drivers and that he is specifically talking company drivers. He also gave me a prehire letter.

CR ENGlAND recruiter told me that since I've been out of work for nearly 2years that if I dont sign up with her before april 2011 i would be unemployable. My question is why can't she use my unemployment benefit history. is she lying to reel me in? I would prefer to get training via WIA and then explore my options with her company. Besides I heard they want people to lease trucks and I'm not into that.

How do I prove to WIA that there are jobs in trucking. It is an investment I know, and they want more than prehires.
Secondly, Swift is not my first pick for obvious reasons. What other companies should I approach for prehires besides W/S in Phoenix AZ.

Last question: How will Mexican truck drivers affect the future of truckers. You dont have to answer all mostly WIA but pass on links for me to study guys. ALso I AM A WOMAN WHO WANTS TRUCK wish me luck!

The WIA counselor is wrong. I would get prehires from Werner, US Xpress, Swift, May and maybe a couple of others. Ask the recruiters if they will send you something saying they accept students from the school you want to attend. Then call the school and get them to accept the WIA funding as payment in full. I would also print out statistics that show how many new drivers will be needed in the next five years. Came in will all of the information you need and ask to speak to someone else if they will not listen. They are just wrong. I had to fight for it and I got it done.

Guess I was lucky here in NC. They were very easy to work with, had everything completed in just over three weeks.
