If the truck does not have one, I would add an exhaust brake to it. I had one on my 96 F-350 crew cab diesel and now on my Ram 2500 diesel. I don't haul anything but a horse trailer with living quarters but it sure helps on the hills. It will also save on you brakes if you use it when not in the hills. I have used several brands, the one I use now is BD Diesel Performance brake from http://m.thoroughbreddiesel.com/

I just have one question, or I should say observation...a 1980 VW Rabbit to a car show?
10-34-1 Thanks this. -
As others said, no you do not need a cdl. You will be fine. That set up you have will pull like a dream. You wont even know there is a trailer behind you.

Before it was changed to air ride:

I bet that thing's a hoot to drive, though it's too low to play up here in NY. I've always wanted to dump a TDI diesel into one myself.
-
Ive seen those TDIs dropped into a few different vehicles. One guy put one in a Toyota 4 runner.

Initially, I thought you were trying to info on how to move cars for hire without doing it legally. There are lots who come on here trying to do just that. Regards.
